I’ve read “I, Claudius” 5 or 6 times, and every time I notice new historical details. This novel is such a compelling mix of carefully researched relationships and tiny details from Suetonius, and then, well, then no ancient writer said that Herod WASN’T sitting next to Claudius giving him advice! No one said that Claudius DIDN’T have a secret girlfriend running his country estate! Aaah, I love this book. I once tried to watch the BBC version with my husband but he got up and went looking for a snack during “don’t touch the figs” (!!!!!) so I guess not everyone is interested in the Julio-Claudians.
