This was 100% not the intention behind the Jumanji reboot movies, but it’s hilarious that the makers created a series that seems tailor made for actors to show off their range.
The Rock and Awkwafina both played a nerdy teenage boy with allergies, as well as Danny DeVito. Kevin Hart, in addition to being his usual fast-paced self, played an old man who is too slow for the rest of the group. And then you have Jack Black who played both a black guy and a white girl. What makes this even cooler is the fact that the actors have only their performance to go off of. No costume changes, no makeup changes, it’s literally just the actor making you believe they are multiple characters.
So in a weird way, the Jumanji reboot movies are the less serious version of what Oscar Isaac was doing for Moon Knight lmao. Oscar had to make you believe he was both Marc and Steven without relying too much on the Moon Knight costume changes (for example, the switch scene in the desert). Same with the cast of the Jumanji movies.
Side note, Nick Jonas and Karen Gillan definitely need more chances to play other characters. Let them show off their range as well, they can do it. Maybe have Spencer adopt a dog that gets transported into the game so that Nick Jonas has to play a dog the whole movie. Or maybe Tony Leung is cast as the principal who becomes a new player, thus Karen Gillan has to play an intense, handsome Asian man old enough to be your father who can act out a scene with just their eyes.
