This video started as a small thought about why cinematic open-world games start to drag near the end. I have a look at a few recent ones I've played and try to figure out what the deal is.

It was bright outside, the way the sun glowed and shined like the heavens had appeared below. Scatters of shadows graced the woods. The trees and plants providing a bit of shade as the person had walked through.
The moss grew up the large trunks. Littering it with hues of green. The way the butterflies flutter around, showing life was prosperous in the area.
The hum of trickling water met their ear.
Leading out from the canopies of shade to mind a secluded area. A pond, then the roar of a decent size waterfall followed.
It was a shade of clear blue. Pure even, as if no other besides the ecosystem had touched it before.
But there was something off. A woman sat in the pool of water. Her curls soaked as she swam around.
Frilly fins perked out fro those tuffs of curls. She didn't mind the person yet, a bit oblivious to their presence even.
Her eyes shimmer as she ducked back under the water. Her teal coated tail drilled behind her as she dove to hide in the waters below.
A Siren.
A legend ones would say even. And to see one this close, to see one during the day even is surprising.
But here she was. Mindlessly swimming around for the time being. Unaware she had a guest in her private area. Her home.even, she made this secluded spot. Far away from humans and their kind even. Her home.
I would like less open world games. I don't want another huge Zelda map, I'd like a well-written linear story with dungeons and a solid plot. I wish to unlock areas and feel some more accomplishment.
[UPDATED 06/11/26] Binwood: Unleashed (Sims 2 Custom Hood) 🌵
Welcome to Binwood: Unleashed!
Hello baby boys! A while ago I thought it would be a fun idea to create a whole custom hood for the Bin families of Sims 2 and that's how Binwood was created. 🌵
The original version of Binwood is featuring apartment lots simulating an "open-world" moment which is fun but not for everybody!
Binwood: Unleashed is the original hood but with residential lots instead, plus a bunch of community lots and a new family! 🌇

Many modern video games fall into the open-world category, giving players vast, detailed worlds to explore – and a new study shows these expansive digital playgrounds have benefits for our mental health. Researchers from Imperial College London and the University of Graz in Austria asked more than 600 postgraduate students about their experiences playing open-world games and how these sessions left them feeling. They found these video games – including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – significantly boost cognitive escapism (taking breaks from thinking about real life), relaxation levels, and overall mental well-being.
