The Ninth, Charlotte Street
With Charlotte Street a favourite media haunt for most on a Friday lunchtime, it can get a little monotonous and lacking in diversity. Roka, Gaucho and Tsunami are the classics, but no-one can go there every week…Can they?
So it was high time something new came along. This time, in the form of Jun Tanaka’s ninth restaurant that he has worked at, but the first he has owned, aptly named The Ninth. In the first weeks of its opening its still relatively unheard of, almost tucked away in between Fitzroy Tavern and Ted’s Grooming Room. So natutrally we had prime spot once seated.
Mediterranean tapas is the vibe here. You can either order off a set lunch menu, or the a la carte, or if you’re greedy like me incapable of making up your mind (simply because there’s delicious dishes featured on both) you can mix it up. Anything goes here essentially, which is a breath of fresh air. No rigid rules to stick to. Definitely come in a group of at least 3 or more in order to try and sample as much as you can off this joy of a menu.
The stand out dishes of the day for me ranged from the oxtail croquettes - never again will cheese and ham croquettes suffice in a tapas restuarant, the salt cod brandade raviolo, bringing together my homeland Portuguese cuisine with a firm pasta favourite, umptuous butternut squash risotto with heaps of cheesy Parmesan, pan fried juicy scallops, and light razor clam ceviche to cleanse the palette. And those were just the ‘starters’. For main, the highlight for me was the beef cheek dish bathing in an oxtail consommé, with peas and broad beans, which just fell apart like butter in the mouth, accompanied by deliciously bitter, but sweet Cavolo Nero with hazelnut pesto and soft cooked Jerusalem artichokes.
This is my new hotspot on Charlotte Street, and a must try for those that haven’t been yet.
Break up your regular haunts and try something different. I can definitely see myself making it a haunt of my own…
