…I’ve been thinking of these as bird shit sedges… But I’m pretty sure they’re rushes now that I’ve had a closer look. Don’t tell my old Plant Tax professor that I struggled with that! #birdshit #natureisbeautiful #Juncaceae #bestguess #Panama #travel #jungle #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography (at Experience Mamoni)
#2314 - Luzula sp - Woodrush
Growing among at least three different species of moss, high on Ruapehu. Probably L. banksiana but that's not the only Luzula known from Mt. Ruapehu.
A cosmopolitan genus of rush, most common in temperate areas, the temperate regions, the Arctic, and alpine areas in the tropics.
It's not certain where the generic name came from - possibilities include the Italian lucciola ("to shine, sparkle") or the Latin luzulae or luxulae, from lux ("light"), apparently because they with dew. but other definitions of lucciola include 'a mid-summer field', or 'a small place'.

A couple of sedges I took out of the plant press yesterday. I haven't identified them yet but I have material in the freezer. I'm avoiding them a little because it took me forever to get an id on the first one.
I'm really pleased how they turned out. The whole reason I wanted to do full herbarium specimens is because the truly works of art. In my plant id class we created smaller specimens by taping plants or part of plants to index cards, and the professor had told us we could create a collection that way and it certainly would've been easier but this is much more satisfying to me.
Bonus: my work table while identifying

Rushes are round, sedges have edges, grasses, like asses, have holes.
a handy rhyme to help you identify the graminoid Poales
