One night in particular stands out in my memory. It was the freezing cold winter of early '63, and my school-friend Ann and I had to queue round the side of the ballroom for tickets. There was ice on the ground, and I slipped, falling backwards and cracked my head. It was so cold, I didn't feel the pain! The day before I'd gone on my half-day to Birkenhead market. I didn't have much money but paid a lot for this pair of black leather shoes. The next night, I wore them for the first time, with my jeans.

The Majestic had a white wrought-iron balcony going round the whole ballroom, with little tables to sit at. We were right at the front of the balcony, looking over the left-hand side, almost over the top of the stage. Whilst I was tapping my foot to the music, my shoe slipped off, over the balcony and onto the stage, hitting John Lennon on the head! There was no alcohol in those days, just bottles of Coke, and he poured his Coca-Cola from this bottle into one of my shoes and proceeded to drink from it! I'd just paid 29/11 for them! ~ June Ashley
