In 1943 North American cranked out more B-25 Mitchell's than the USAAF could accept- about 800 were offered the U.S. Navy- although the Navy trialed the B-25 in regular carrier operations off the USS Shangri-La, it was too big for the Navy who were pinning their hopes on the upcoming Grumman F7F Tigercat in the twin engine attack role. The Marines, however, ever resourceful with what the Navy didn't want (it was the USMC that made excellent use of the F4U Corsair before the Navy was willing to let it on their flight decks), took the B-25s and designated them PBJ for Patrol Bomber, J being North American's manufacturer code. Used in anti-shipping and interdiction strikes, the Marines fielded nine PBJ squadrons before the Pacific War ended. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #kafw #afw #fortworth #allianceairshow #airport #texas #fwaas2011 #fwaas11 #NorthAmerican #B25 #PBJ #Mitchell #avgeekschoolofknowledge #avgeekery #JuneAvPhotoADay | Day 25 | B-25 | @kjdphoto1971 (at Fort Worth Alliance Airport)
