i really love the differences between boy in luv and boy with luv for a couple reasons. im going to use she/her pronouns to describe the female roles in each video.

you know how in boy in luv there's a common love interest, but she's treated as an object throughout the video whereas in boy with luv halsey is an active part of the video without having to be objectified or overly sexualized

boy in luv kind of reinforces the role that the "man" is in charge of the relationship where boy with luv explicitly asks the girl in question to teach them what her needs are

let's talk about the cinematography. boy in luv is dark and grunge-y whereas boy with luv is full of color and a lightness. that in itself is important to me. love is supposed to be a beautiful thing that brings color and light into your world, not the opposite.

in boy with luv, the boys don't ever touch or show scenes of them touching halsey in a way that could be considered nonconsensual, whereas there are a few scenes in boy in luv that could be interpreted that way.

boy in luv is more of a selfish song that exhibits a lot of toxic masculinity a lot of teenage boys experience, but boy with luv is a way more genuine and humble song, where the boys have learned that a relationship is mutual, soft, and sweet

im so happy with the growth these boys are showing and that they're breaking a lot of chains society had tried to enforce upon them. it's okay for boys to be soft and gentle. it's okay for boys to want their partner to teach them about their interests, likes, dislikes, and to have mutual communication and understanding. it's okay for boys to not know everything.
