North Star
I just spent 3 days at my college Fall Leadership Institute conference. It was alright. Not the best but I learned a few things from the 3 keynote speakers we had. The title is taking from our second keynote speaker Jung Park about finding your North Star. I can't condense his speech but I will point out a point that I took away.
Finding your North Star is finding something that is constant in your life where you can look at it when you need that extra push in life whether that be motivation or happiness (nothing negative please). That North Star could be your mentors. Like Jung Park said, Mentors are your benchmarks and you SHOULD have more than one mentor. One mentor for everything you are in life. A mentor there for your professional and personal life whether that be being a mother or a Social Worker. Once again, there should be more than one mentors in your life.
I find mentors extremely important. I never really had a mentor in high school. I was never even introduced to that idea! I wish I did because I needed that role model, someone to look up to in life who can be a phone call away and help me through anything I needed. It wasn't until my senior year in high school where I needed a mentor for my Senior Project. That was when I was introduced to the term mentor. She was a great resource for me! She answered my questions and helped guide me through my great project in which I took first place!
My most recent mentor was through my teaching internship. Thank goodness I had a mentor or else I would go crazy! My relationship with my mentor was amazing! She was able to observe my classroom and give me constructive criticisms so that I can better myself and the classroom. She was knowledgeable about teaching and she had great resources to provide to me when I needed math worksheets or when I had trouble with my students learning style. We both kept an open mind and were able to listen and help each other. She kept me sane.
So like Jung Park said, find your North Star(s). Get mentors for everything you are in life.
