hi! I have a grad school question, a school I applied to and want to attend sent me an offer of guaranteed support, is this the same as an acceptance? do I need to respond positively? (also, i really enjoyed your conversation about defining classical music!)
I’ve never heard of an “offer of guaranteed support,” so I would have to read the wording of the letter to tell you what exactly it means. If it includes money (which is what I’m assuming “support” means, but again, I’d have to read it) they are obligated to follow through, so I’d say whether or not they accepted you before they would have to accept you then. It is totally worth asking the admissions committee chair or their secretary about if you’re unsure! And you don’t have to say anything about your response or your leanings when you ask unless you want to. They’ll only need to know by the deadline, which is probably in the letter (and is probably April 15th anyway.)
I wish I could be of more help--I’ve really never heard of that kind of offer before. Good luck though!
Hi! I'm about to start my last year in undergrad (anthropology) and am working on emails to send to grad programs I'm interested in and had a few questions. Who do I send the emails to? What vital information should I include? Thanks for your time!
If you know of any specific programs you’re interested in, find the contact information for the professors doing what you want to do! It’s usually listed on the department website - it’s often very easy to find the e-mails, but if you can’t, e-mail the department secretary or the department e-mail asking to put you in contact with the relevant professors.
As for the content, you want to keep it SUPER short because professors get e-mails all the time and will not generally take the time to read more than a few sentences. Not because they don’t want to - they just don’t have time! So I’d try to keep it 3-4 sentences with the most pertinent information to attract their attention. This is generally like your name, your background, your research interests, anything that particularly attracts you about the program, and a request to talk more about it.
Keep in mind - if you ask a question, MAKE SURE THE ANSWER ISN’T POSTED SOMEWHERE OBVIOUS. For instance, if you just want to know about degree requirements, the information will probably be in the department website or part of the university graduate bulletin. If you ask a question with an easily findable answer, it won’t necessarily reflect badly on you, but it triples the likelihood that you’ll get a copy-and-paste template e-mail in response or your request will be forwarded to the secretary, meaning the professor hasn’t actually engaged at all. So I’d ask a question that’s more personal and more showing your actual vision of joining the program, such as, “What kinds of opportunities do your students get to do original research in [x]?” or “What does the department do in order to foster a sense of professional community among its students?” etc. etc.
I hope this helps!
okay so besides other tattoo ideas we've talked about, like a really cute/elaborate tea pot or cup would be rad
