Raaahhh happy rook week! Thanks to @rookappreciationweek for organising this event<3 I haven't had the time to write anything for it, so this week I'm going to draw some of my mutual's rooks! "JUNO!"

The door to Juno Thorne's room banged open with an extremely loud noise.

Zea Fen'nan — his equally loud brother — came barrelling through, waving a bright piece of paper above his head.

"Juno, Juno, Juno!" He scaled the ladder up to Juno's loft bed in record time, launching himself head-first into the ceiling and collapsing into a heap at the end of the mattress.

Juno pulled his book closer to his chest, peering over his knees at the lump.

"Uh, hey." He greeted. Zea groaned pathetically. "You alright?"

"Yeah-" Zea pulled himself to his hands and knees, crawling further up the bed.

He collapsed down at Juno's side, squashing himself between the boy and the wall and weakly lifted his hand, dropping the colourful paper into Juno's lap.

"We gotta do it, Juno," He slurred, "We gotta sign up."

Juno slid his book to the side, blinking down at what appeared to be a poorly designed pamphlet.

It was all red and obnoxious purple, with white text in a font almost too loopy to be legible.

"A… talent show," He read out slowly, "…At school?"

"Yes." Zea propped himself up onto his elbows, crowding into Juno's personal space.

"And you want to do this?"

"Yes!"

"…Why?"

"Because, look!" Zea tapped vigorously at some small text, squished onto the bottom of the paper.

Juno squinted at it.

"First place prize is a fifty dollar Cheesecake factory voucher." He stated.

"Exactly!"

"Zea, if you want cheesecake, I'll buy you cheesecake…"

"Fifty bucks, Juno. Fifty."

Juno stared blankly at him. He really didn't get it.

Zea huffed at him. He sat up properly and yanked the pamphlet from Juno's hands.

"You don't understand the gravity of this situation." He chastised, shaking his head as he read the paper once again. "We're doing the talent show."

"I mean, sure." Juno shrugged. There was no point in fighting this. "If you want. Do we have any talents?"

"I can sing?"

"You want to sing in front of a group of horrible teenagers who already hate us?"

"… I can play guitar?"

"You can?"

"Yes!" Zea looked offended for a split second, before instantly becoming distracted by the arrival of a 'brilliant' idea.

"Wait, we can borrow Davrin's drum set! I can teach you a rhythm, it's not that hard! Oh, wait, what if we borrowed Davrin — we can make him play the drums! And you can-"

"Zea." Juno frowned as he cutting his brother off.

Zea blinked.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm suspended."

"Oh. Yeah. Shit."

He stared down at the paper in his hands and deflated.

"They might still let you perform?" He tried, hope flitting back into his tone.

Juno hesitated.

"Yeah, maybe?" He tried, "You can ask."

"Yeah." He folded the paper up and slid it into his pocket. "I'll ask."

Silence fell. Juno watched the disappointed expression on Zea's face and, not for the first time, was hit by a wave of anger at this stupid suspension. It wasn't fair. He hadn't even started the fight, he had been defending himself.

It was just because Principle Glowstrum had it out for the both of them.

"Yeah, it's fine," Zea sniffed. He'd slipped into a facade of flippancy. "Guess I'll just ask tomorrow."

With a shrug, he began to move away, shuffling over the mattress, then sliding down the ladder.

"Hey," Juno called, leaning over the railing of his bed, "If I'm not allowed, do it with Davrin. Then you still get a chance at your voucher."

A look flickered over Zea's face, a look that said 'but i wanted to do it with you'. Then he cocked his head and gave a lop-sided grin.

"What do you mean 'a chance'," He teased, "I'm getting that voucher."

Juno snorted, "Sure you are. And when you do, you're taking me to Cheesecake Factory."

"Woah! Presumptive much! My cheesecake thank you very much."

"Arse."

Zea just grinned wider as he walked backwards out the room.

Almost exactly twenty four hours later, the door to Juno's room was thrown open again.

Juno startled, dropping the eyeliner he was holding, and smearing gold glitter all across his cheek.

"Zea!" He hissed, spinning around, "Learn to knock!"

The shit-head merely grinned at him from the door way.

"Guess what — Ooh, nice make up — Guess what!"

Juno glared at him, "What?"

"Okay, so," Zea strode into the room and flopped down into Juno's desk chair. "I went to speak to Ms Charter today, right? And she told me that she couldn't make the decision because she's not in charge of suspensions. Which is absolutely crazy seeing as she's running it and should get to decide who is and isn't allowed to participate, but, whatever-"

It took Juno a moment to recall the talent show and yesterday's conversation, but he did eventually cotton on.

"So, I went to speak to Professor Volkarin about it, 'cause I figured since he's Vice-Principal, he'd have a say in stuff, but as I was, Principal Glowstrum shows up!"

Juno grimaced. There was no way they were getting into that talent show.

"He just about loses it, screaming stuff like you're meant to be getting punished and shit, so I start screaming back, and the whole time I'm just thinking, 'man, we are so cooked'-"

A shared sentiment.

"-But then! Professor Volkarin stepped in!"

A pleasant surprise.

"He ripped Glowstrum a new one, Juno! It was amazing, he all but told him to fuck off!" There was sheer delight shining in Zea's eyes. "Oh, you would have loved it, it was literally the best thing I've ever seen. You know how the Professor gets any time someone is messing around during a practical? Like all stiff and stuff and like frown-ey? He did that to Principal Glowstrum, it was amazing!"

Juno found himself grinning. He would have loved to see that; Professor Volkarin's disappointed glare was the stuff of legend.

"So, guess who's doing the talent show!" Zea leant forwards, legs swinging and smile stretched wide.

"Is it us?" Juno grinned.

"Hell yeah it is!"

It was two minutes until the act before them finished and the Thorne brothers were due on stage. Juno was standing behind the temporary stage erected in the sports hall, watching in horror as Zea desperately tried to sellotape the hole in Davrin's bass drum shut.

"He's going to kill us." Juno whispered.

"It'll be fine-" Zea squeaked.

"We're dead. We're actually dead." His hands went to his head, gripping onto his short curls. "He'll never speak to us again."

"Sure he will." Zea slapped another length of tape onto the drum. "He won't even notice!" His voice cracked under the weight of his own denial. "It's fine-"

As he pressed another rectangle of tape onto the drum, the previous layers of tape gave in, and Zea's hand passed through the skin of the drum, punching straight into the hollow and severely worsening the hole.

"Oh, fuck."

They did not win the talent show. Davrin did end up speaking to them again.... Eventually.

Rookfest Day 4: Alternate Universe

Western Lucea! Western Lucea! Western Lucea! Western Luce-

"Brief" Au breakdown for their relationship under the cut

In this Western Au, Zea is a Warden/Deputy for the city of Weisshaupt, along with Davrin and @cy-guy1518's Juno Thorne. They get up to many silly shenanigans, including the attempted arrest of infamous assassin Lucanis Dellamorte. Keyword in that sentence being "attempted". So, Lucanis gets away the first time they meet and Zea resolves to catch him, except that Lucanis gets away the next time, and the time after that, and the time after that, and even the time after that, until they've met enough times that they find they rather enjoy the mutually antagonistic raport.

At some point they get stranded together, perhaps thrown from a train or cut off from others by a stampede, and are forced to make the long trek back to civilisation in with only each other for company. Nights are long and cold in the desert, and leave plenty of time for deep conversations. By the time the sun comes up they've both realised that they have no intention of ever bringing the other harm. From there, things snowball quick. What starts as amicable conversations and a silent understanding spirals into stolen kisses and purposefully sabotaged arrest attempts. I imagine it's here that the kiss above takes place, a good bye and a good luck before Zea conveniently "loses sight" of Lucanis again. Neither Juno nor Davrin are impressed by this, but they also care too much for Zea to rat him out.

Things come to ahead when a different group of Wardens actually manage to catch Lucanis. The First Warden is not happy that this criminal has been able to evade the law for so long, and so he intends to make an example of Lucanis. Zea, upon hearing the news, rushes to his rescue. He tries to stop it but the First Warden isn't having it. He starts to threaten Zea with punishment, with being sacked, with being arrested himself, and eventually threatens to have Lucanis executed. That's when Zea draws his gun and shoots the First Warden point blank. And is promptly arrested for murder. But at least Lucanis manages to get away.

That night, Lucanis returns and teams up with Juno and Davrin to break Zea out of jail. The three of them leave town to lay low, with Davrin staying behind to clean up some of the mess. Cue desert shenanigans for a couple of months until they get the all-clear from Davrin that they can return to Weisshaupt, where Evka is now First Warden and no one is still upset that Zea got rid of the last guy - he was never very nice anyway.

And they all lived happily ever after, hoorayyy :)

Rook's journey

Right now most of us have one or more 'canon' Rooks. But what were their beginnings? What has changed since this first time you made them in the CC? Appearance, faction, class, backstory - share whatever you want

Ahhh, thank you @jukkaricity for the tag. A chance to yap meta about my freak! I'll tag @in-the-drowning-deep, @elishnord, @awardenandacrow, @serjory, and @cy-guy1518.

So! I started playing Veilguard because my friends were Dragon Age fans and spoke about it when it was coming out, and I wanted to know what they were talking about. I didn't put too much thought into the character creator, mainly just changing a preset slightly and taking one of the generated names. Zea looks pretty much the same now as he did when I created him. I've only changed his scars and body tattoos, and made his heterochromia slightly more pronounced.

I got to the Minrathous-Treviso decision, then put the game down and forgot about it for months. Then, sometime in April last year (I can actually pinpoint the exact day the obsession started, thank you Discord time stamps), a friend began asking questions about Zea. So I picked up the game again to get some pictures of him for them.

My first mistake.

My second mistake was sitting down and creating a backstory for him.

Zea's original backstory was very similar to his current backstory, with a few small changes. Originally, he was born in the Anderfells, and he left home to learn magic, returning after his father fell ill. This was before I really understood the DA lore about mages and the Dalish. Now he's from the edge of Arlathan and was taught to control his magic by his mother.

The nail in the coffin for me was when @cy-guy1518 told me about Juno and we decided they were brothers. We then immediately created crippling angst for them (The Fight™ haunts me. I can't finish writing it, I'm scared). I was obsessed with Zea, Juno, and Dragon Age from then on.

I've fleshed out Zea's backstory since then - especially the time between Joining the Wardens and meeting Juno - and his future, including coming up with a convoluted way for him and Juno to escape the Calling (And also bring Harding back to life while they're at it).

His personality has drifted slightly from his original. He's become more of a jokester, and far less vulnerable with his emotions. He's still painfully optimistic, hopeful, and kind, but now has a bit of a mean streak and the ability to be truly cruel if cornered. He's just like his mother now fr.

Zea has always been romancing Lucanis, even back when he was a nothing-character that was just a vessel for me to play through. I thought the traumatised assassin man was funky, and fell to the propaganda of my lucanis-mancer friends, and decided to romance him. Oh boy am I glad I did, because these two freaks are so in love, and I now cannot imagine Zea with anyone else in the Veilguard. (I will say that romancing Lucanis did effect my original reason to save Treviso. However, I think Zea would save Treviso anyway because, to him as a Warden, he has more reasons to see the Blight as a greater risk to the Venatori). Zea's always been an elf and a mage, as well as a Grey Warden (although the shadow-dragon Zea au goes hard..... as does the Venatori one.)

TLDR: Not a lot has changed about Zea since I first made him. Mostly he has become a stronger character, with a backstory that makes more sense for the DA world, and a brother who means the world to him.

@cy-guy1518 hey so, do you ever think about the period of time where Zea's off with Varric? Do you ever think about how he keeps forgetting to write letters to Juno? Do you ever think about how Juno is subconsciously grieving because he has no clue if his idot brother has got himself killed yet or not? Do you ever think about how the last time Juno saw his brother, he was storming off after a screaming match with with the First Warden. Do you ever think about how it took a week for Juno to get a letter from him? Because I do. I do a lot.

Hey Juno,

I'm not coming back to Weisshaupt, not for a while. I've been recruited to save the world (by the Inquisition I think?). Sorry I didn't get to say good bye. I think this is for the best though, I really don't need to be near the First Warden for a while. This job should take about six months so at least I'm doing something over my suspension. Im writing this letter so you know I haven't died or anything. Don't worry, I'll be safe and responsible and blah blah blah. I'm travelling with two dwarves right now, Lace Harding and Varric Tethras (I rhink he's an author or something? He got real sad when I told him I've never read 'Hard in Hightown'), and they're both quite very nice. Apparently we're chasing the Dread Wolf but can't be worse than Darkspawn, right? Again, I'm sorry for storming off and K did mean to say goodbye but, in my defence, I was very drunk when I left. Hey, can you do me a favour? Stick with Evka and Antoine until I'm back. They're not exactly the First Warden's favourites either and they can keep him off your back. If they're already gone, go back to Weisshaupt and ask around for an elf named Leon. Tell him you're my brother and he'll keep an eye on you. I love you, Juno, and I'll keep writing to you, I promise.
