Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is part of the Bureau of Land Management’s 27-million acre National Conservation Lands program and the only unit east of the Mississippi River. A South Florida gem, the 120-acre site is recognized for its remarkable array of natural and cultural resources. Its location at the confluence of the Loxahatchee River and Indian River Lagoon has made the site a popular and strategic site of human occupation for the past 5,000 years. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area provides opportunities for fishing, relaxing, wildlife view, touring the lighthouse, and learning!

Here are some interesting updates on what's going on at the ONA: The ONA has a new mile long nature trail as well as a quarter mile trail that ends in an outlook on the Indian River Lagoon. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area boasts sunrise nature walks, paddles, educational events and many volunteer opportunities.

The ONA is a great fishing location! From opportunities to catch snook, surf perch, Jacks, Sheepshead, catfish and snapper to attending fishing classes and events, there is plenty for anglers to do at the ONA. The staff at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA recently installed hammock posts so visitors can bring their hammock and relax in the ONA. These hammock posts have become very popular, improved experiences for the public, and even made the news! While the ONA wasn't in Hurricane Irma’s direct path, it brought power outages, downed tree branches, trash, and other damage. However, the staff, partners, and volunteers for National Public Lands Day removed thousands of pounds of garbage, micro trash, and recyclables from the site and were able to open it within a week. Volunteers and partners are helping to keep the ONA and the lighthouse great! Some of our great partners include: the Loxahatchee Historical Society (operates and maintains the lighthouse), American Conservation Experience (provides interns to help with many ONA responsibilities), West Palm Beach Fishing Club (donates gear), Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (leads classes and organizes events) and FishingCommunity.Org (hosts fishing classes and events for veterans and their families).

Today is Manatee Appreciation Day! We’re Celebrating at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area in Florida

Manatees are frequent visitors to Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (ONA) shoreline. Sometimes they pass by as they migrate, but occasionally they hang out for a while to feed and relax around the lighthouse. Be sure to look out for these gentle giants when you're out on the water around the ONA!

Located on south Florida’s populous Atlantic coast is a small vestige of natural Florida – the 120 acre Outstanding Natural Area. Although small, the site’s location at the confluence of the Loxahatchee River and Indian River Lagoon – just a ¼ mile from the Atlantic Ocean - provides for a wealth of natural diversity, and has been of strategic importance for human activity for over 5,000 years.

The site is widely known for its namesake lighthouse constructed in 1860, but beyond the light, the site houses unique military history, and evidence of human occupation dating back to 3,000 B.C.  More remarkable still, the site encompasses several rare and sensitive natural plant communities, providing habitat for more than 25 special status species.

Visitors to the ONA can tour the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, experience native coastal and upland habitats, watch for manatees, or engage in one of a multitude of the sites’ interpretive and educational programs.

Congress designated the historic lighthouse, and its environs, to be an Outstanding Natural Area on May 8, 2008. Acre-for-acre, the site is among the BLM’s most diverse National Conservation Lands units, and the only unit east of the Mississippi River.
