Let’s talk about sea turtles and Black Sails!
Weird, I know, but walk about a bit in my brain.
First, let’s revisit the Flint’s Dragon Speech.
And now…Sea turtles?

(What follows is copy pasted from a private message I sent to @tiofrean as I was flopping about in my feelings.)
This morning I came in early to take a breakfast catering order and was driving through Holmes Lake Park (so many trees changing with the leaves just ablaze) and the sun was still low in the sky and the moon was setting, but it was hovering just over the tree line and so huge and full that I gasped as soon as it came into view.
It reminded me of watching the moon rise over the Atlantic Ocean in Jupiter, FL, where the sea turtles come up at night to nest and lay their eggs. I was in the Marine Biology club in high school (because of COURSE) and even after that, for years, we would go and watch the turtles laying their eggs on the beach in the late spring and later in the autumn, we would go to watch them hatch…hundreds at a time, scurrying down the beach to the ocean, guided only by the light of the moon, and a trail of light reflected on the water, like a path leading them home.
All the area businesses and hotels (around the time of hatching) are restricted from utilizing outdoor lighting in any part of their property that faces the beach because the baby turtles get confused, go towards the hotels instead of the water, and die…because the false lights are brighter than the moon and I thought oh…wow. There’s freedom in the dark, right? When the world shines its lights too brightly, you can’t see the truth and you’re led astray. And I saw in that instant, Silver and Flint, sitting on a blanket on the sand, painted in moonlight. It’s Silver’s safe space that he shares with Flint. They go to watch the turtles nesting, and Silver tells Flint about the lights and about how much he longs to watch the baby turtles hatch, but he always misses them…it really is up to chance if you’re there on the right night.
