SS Panel, UT. An impressive Barrier Canyon Style panel, roughly dated between 1500-7000 years old. This Archaic style has many trademark characteristics, mostly pictographs painted in red ochre, elongated bodies often missing limbs, animal companions… It would take multiple posts to list all the specifics associated with this style, but the overall feeling I get from BCS imagery is “otherworldly”.
This panel is not an easy one to get to, located up an extremely steep talus slope with barely any level surfaces to stand on once you reach the top. Whoever created this one wanted the image to be seen from a distance. The figures loom over the canyon like sentries.
The large rectangular glyph (Slide 1) could be a zoomorph whose limbs have washed away. The zoomorph in Slides 3 & 4 could be a bear or possibly a domesticated dog. I especially like the handprints below the panels that almost look like the creator wiped their fingers on the wall after painting the images

The US Fish and Wildlife Service's creative and innovative outreach dates back more than a century, as shown in this 1911 "EAT THE CARP!" poster imploring Americans to embrace, fish, and eat the heavily proliferating carp. The poster is a brilliant appeal to turn of the century foodies! (NARA holds millions of records from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Record Group 22, dating back to 1868!)
"Catch the carp; buy the carp, cook the carp properly and eat it. Eat the roe; can the roe. Make carp jelly. Can the fish. Smoke it too."

At Katmai National Park and Preserve in #Alaska, #salmon are the lifeblood of a fertile coastal ecosystem. At #BrooksFalls, the salmon must run a gauntlet of hungry bears, wolves, birds and other fish-eaters before proceeding further inland to spawn. Every summer, tens of thousands of sockeye salmon migrate from Bristol Bay to #spawn in rivers adjacent to large lakes, such as the #BrooksRiver, which connects Lake Brooks and Naknek Lake in the park. These homecoming salmon—weighing an average of 5-7 pounds—spend their first years of life in freshwater and their last 2-3 years in the ocean, where they attain the bulk of their mass. A #SockeyeSalmon fresh from the sea in July contains around 4,500 calories; a spawned out salmon in September may only have half that many. The Bears feast on them and turn into the celebrities from #FatBearWeek we all love. Great Basin National Park in Nevada is one of the darkest spots in the United States. What better time to appreciate this park's clear night sky, then on International Day of Clean Air? Good air quality coupled with a lack of light pollution give visitors majestic starry views of Wheeler Peak. On clear, moonless nights at Great Basin, thousands of stars, numerous planets, star clusters, meteors, man-made satellites, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye. The area boasts some of the darkest night skies left in the country. Low humidity, good air quality, and minimal light pollution, combined with high elevation, create a unique window to the universe.
