Cicero Accusing Catiline in the Senate - Cesare Mariani (1882)

Can’t find much information about this image online, but it was painted for the same competition that was one by the more famous painting with the same subject by Cesare Macari. This painting might be more historically accurate though, in that the senate on this occasion met in the grounds of the temple of Jupiter Stator (the site and layout of which are not definitely known, but which, I suppose, have contained a courtyard?), rather than the senate house, as depicted by Macari. Also, Macari gives the senate house a curved wall, which was not the case.

Also, the figure of Catiline in this painting looks as if it has been erased somehow? I don’t know what’s going on with that?

Roman Calendar - June 27: Dies natalis for the temple of Jupiter Stator

In 294 BCE things were going badly for Romans at  the Battle of Lucera and their lines were collapsing. As a last resort desperate Consul Marcus Atilius Regulus vowed a temple to Jupiter if he helped them to beat Samnites. This saved the day, since Romans regrouped and eventually the enemy was defeated. The victorious consul also kept his word and  during the same year a temple was erected on Palatine Hill for Jupiter the Sustainer.

During the following centuries a couple of interesting incidents took place there. In 63 BCE Cicero convened the Senate in this temple and held his first speech against Catiline. The confiscated property of the late Pompey the Great was also auctioned there. The only bid was made by Marcus Antonius though it has been speculated that the actual bidder was Julius Caesar.

Temple of 'Jupiter the Stayer' found

Rome - The temple built by Romulus to celebrate the hand of Jupiter giving Roman troops their unstoppable force has been found at the foot of the Palatine Hill, Italian archaeologists say. The ruins of the shrine to Jupiter Stator (Jupiter the Stayer), believed to date to 750 BC, were found by a Rome University team led by Andrea Carandini.

"We believe this is the temple that legend says Romulus erected to the king of the gods after the Romans held their ground against the furious Sabines fighting to get their women back after the famous Rape (abduction)," Carandini said in the Archeologia Viva (Living Archaeology) journal. Read more.
