Simulation theory
Okay, let’s talk seriously about this new album, because the amount of things I can say about it is infinite. First of all, I love it and I think it’s brilliant, I can see the amount of hardwork that they putted in this album and how it portrays the beautiful dark pretty shady and dark (have I said dark?) soul of Matt.
The theme
Matt have created a quite personal album talking about his deeper feelings into a simulation theory. There are two timelines in this story that intersect, the real and the ‘unreal’ timeline. The real timeline starts with Thought Contagion and ends with The Dark Side. The second timeline starts with Pressure and ends with The void. They talk about how there are hidden monsters in this world that are woken up through love (see the videoclip of Thought Contagion and Pressure and you’ll see). Everyone says that the most beautiful part of us wakes up when we are in love, well...and what about the worst part? What if love can turn us into monsters? What if we are in love with a monster? What if nothing is real? Can love win our hidden monsters? Let’s see!
Timeline 1
Thought Contagion
Thought Contagion has those lyrics...that seem to be quite political...but no. I mean, yes, but criticism can have hidden feelings to, isn’t it? It talks how we are influenced by our environment and how other’s ideas can become a virus that devour our minds. Not the only criticism to mass media but a quite powerful one. The aesthetic is clearly from the 80′s. Past ideas that are now like a virus? We all know that Matt have made lots of songs about how relationships can become toxic and painful. Maybe the virus is those past memories that are coming. The videoclip also shows how one member of the couple is the monster and those who should stop this pain are also monsters probably because the virus of her mind has made them this way. But there are more monsters, no...? Something human
Here we see how Matt is looking for the past, the retrograde. This past is hidden in differents dimensions that cannot be seen through the real world. We are getting inside Matt’s feelings. However, when he finds the past he was looking for, he finds that he was also a monster. Maybe he did not behave like he should, but he has chaged, he’s no longer a monster, but who are you then? Something human talks about how he’s fed up of his journey and he needs a bit of humanism and touch and love. This is the first foresadowing of the future events of the song. Matt does not really belong to the real world because he’s no longer a monster; he belongs to that part of his feelings that no one can see, he belongs to the ‘unreal’, to the ‘simulation’. The dark side
Matt finally gets into the deepest part of himself that seems an unidirectional road full of the biggest monsters he has seen during this album. He firstly destroys one monster’s head that might be his old mindselt and scapes from that place to continue during he’s road. This place is the retrograde, he’s old feelings that no one has seen, the story not told. He has lived in there, the 80′s aesthetic here is the most powerful of the entire album because this is the part that most relates to the past. As we see in the videoclip of algorithm, the journey is actually backwards, Matt is driving to the past. But, where?
Timeline 2
Pressure
Matt gets from the retrograde to the past, the simulation. The past memories when the monsters were created. There’s an oxymoron between the tone of the lyrics and the melody where the lyrics seem quite negative and the melody seems positive. This is to represent the hidden distress that is behind apparent happiness. The monsters are created by the consequences of love again, but this time by accident. Accidents can happen when a couple is young and in love. We see many references to back to the future as there are several similarities between the concepts of going to the past to change the present and go to the past to destroy the lies that affect the present. The monsters of thought contagion are being born, and spreading themselves through out the highschool. We see that Matt does not belong to this past, it is unreal, and his body seems to turn holographic when exposed to this unreal world.
Break it to me
Newborns monsters are coming but they remain human. Matt’s voice is the human part stuck between the retrograde and the simulation, representing the human part that wants to scape the simulation. However, the monster is the rage, the virus that creates the thought contagion, represented by a strong riff with a refference to rage against the machine as it is the rage created by the simulation. The past voice is represented by an egiptian scale that wants to scape the simulation, that is abruptly broken in the second stanza by the present Matt that has passed to the retrograde and wants a reborn of this memories. This is represented through this metaphor of reborn and religious trascendance that is a common topic in muse’s music (specially in absolution). Here we have the perfect combination of origin of symmetry, blackholes and revelations and absolution even been fresh and new and very innovative.
Propaganda
A pre-thought contagion, where all the fake and manipulated ideas are flowing through the simulation. The propaganda chorus wub wub fuckers propropropropropagandagandagandaganda is artificial and aggressive to represent those ideas which is henhaced by the repetition of the word in order to be catchy and get into your mind like a virus. Matt is fed up of the simulation and feels that he cannot do nothing against it. He feels alone in this ‘dark fantasy’ and the distress increases as the virus continues spreading. He’s weakness is represented by the pitch of the voice whose seems to be demiwhispering. Acoustic instruments also represents tthe human part of the song that contrasts with the artificial ideas created by the simulation.
Algorithm
OK, now the codingis going to be massive. Our friend Terry which I identify as an alter ego of Matt in the simulation is looking for an answer for what happened in the videoclip of pressure. He finds the way to comunicate with Matt that is stuck in the retrograde and he reveals him that they are in a simulation. He shows a code that should be broken. Here we find a few interpretations. The code in google shows a Time’s Magazine that talks about revealing against our creator and an article about 11S. The album was released the 9th of the 11. Maybe it’s just a couincidence but there are a bunch of codes in the videoclip that shows other articles related to the 11S. Another finding can be a blank document that’s called SAM1611. This, I think, is an algorithm that randomises youtube because the actual videos don’t seem to correlate in anyway. SAM is also called Significant Analysis of Microarrays which tries to find statistical validity in gene expression. The videoclip shows a lot of work with genetics, specially when they show the gene code of the monster that is actually an cytomegalovirus that can infect anyone and even cause death. Also, one of the symptoms is a purple rush on the skin and we know how related this colour is to the monsters. When we go to the next shot of the screen the code will take us to another Time’s Magazine in which appears the important symbol of the cars. The shot says ‘render schematic?’ that refers to spectrophonometer, the amount of light that reflects or absorbs an object in order to arrive to the darkest part, the retrograde, the dark side. Terry edits his genes in order to be able to scape simulation turning himself into a human (mixing simulation with the inner part of feelings wil make him not belong to the simulation and be able to scape) and constructs a portal that absorbs the light from the simulation to arrive to the dark side. ‘This means war with your creator’ the creator of the simulation. As he has monster genes, he’s detected as a virus by the retrograde. When he skips all the attacks of the retrograde, he finds the arcade of thought contagion with Matt’s image. He tries to play to it but he struggles so he unplugs it what ends the distress of the retrograde as the game that keeps the simulation alive and the retrograde unseen is disconnected so the dark side turns into light destroying this way the simulation and letting the real feelings free.
Intersection of the timelines
Dig down
The feelings that were stuck in the simulations now are free. This feelings are our new character, this blonde woman. She finds that she has not one of her feets but she has an artificial one that she can use. This shows how even when she thinks her feet is lost, ‘she must find a way’. She’s being persecuted by the creators of the simulation, that want to return her to the unseen retrograde. The melody is constant as it looks for you to remmember it. It wants to be catchy. It wants you to not forget about this message of hope. She ends fighting the persecuters and finding the heart of the simulation that now is dominated by this message of love and hope.
Get up and fight
Hope is free, but we have to fight the remain contagion of fake ideas that is out there. For this we have love, because love can destroy but it can also be a powerful weapon. Again, a catchy song, because Matt does not want you to forget his message.
Blockades
This is the manifesto for fighting the thought contagion. This cycle can end, with hope, love and determination...what the hell...does Matt like Undertale?
The simulation is broken but the mind virus still out there, we have to fight for our lifes, don’t comeback to the darkside of hidden feelings and simulated realities.
The void
Everything was wrong, the retrograde is not silent anymore, now we are free.
Finale
Okay, now my conclusions. This is one of the greatest works muse have made. The amount of detail, personal feelings and attention is stunning. For me, it is genuinly a 10/10.
everytime I listen to this song (Algorithm) and Matt sings "this means" I can just hear "MEMES, MEMES" and that will be the whole ass mood for this album shitpost
When you enter the code this appears
And it lets you see the full text of this Times bouletine.
Come on!! Look for it!!
