Those sure are some weird noises coming from the drawing room, especially for this time at night. Go investigate?

Shoji had been listening for a while since the sounds had startled him awake. Each little scratch seemed louder, closer in the dark, and yet the adrenaline in his limbs had rendered them stiff and unreactive.

A loud scrape sent his heart rate soaring and his fingers fumbling for the lamp. He sat up, trying to still his harsh breathing and listen. The scratching continued, muted once again. Chosaku still hadn’t returned, and Shoji was painfully alone.

He tried to think through the less terrifying possibilities. A stray bird might have flown in through the window. Chosaku, or his aide, might have come back to search for an important paper. The paparazzi might have heard of their loss and decided to pry…

Shoji bolted out of bed, grabbing the under-18 national chess trophy from his shelf, and ran down to the drawing room. He flung the door open, screaming, wielding the trophy as menacingly as he could in his current attire.
