how do you write the engineer/conductors accent so well? just sounding out the words or is there a neat trick? i've got boyos who talk similarly so always up to learning tips or tricks to write them better
Practice, practice, practice and a good friend who is from Edinburgh whose father is from Glasgow who kindly gave me lessons via voicechat every weekend for the better part of two months- I wanted to get an accent that wasn’t a horrible insult to every Scot on the planet (being Unfortunately English, all too easy to risk that) but which was also understandable for people from non-English speaking countries. We ended up with what he sounds like today and so far it works! I also recommend watching Limmy’s Show, which is hysterical, but also wonderful practice for the accent if you listen to a phrase and try to mimic it until you get it right.
I am presently doing this same method for learning an Irish accent: being taught/coached by a friend from Ireland, while watching his recommended viewing. This is basically how I’ve learned any accent you hear! My worst by far (aka the one which I need to work on) is Wudlig’s austrian/germanic hash, but even then people have said it’s not as bad as I think, so perhaps there’s hope there yet. Anyway, your best bet is to find someone who really does have the accent and talk to them- going off generic media representation/what you *think* the accent sounds like is a one way road to disaster.
