4. what are some themes you love writing about?
I’m definitely more drawn to (emotional) angst and hurt/comfort than to fluff, partly because I’m personally not really into romance but also partly because I feel it fits the mood of the show as well as the characters of Derek and Stiles better. I like crack and humor too for much the same reason.
What’s most interesting to me, though, is the psychology of these characters. Derek especially has so much interpretative depth; his backstory and his canonical behavior create this wealth of possible interpretations of his personality and of why he is the way he is. And all of these different possible interpretations can be mapped onto fanfiction tropes accordingly. Anything can make sense; professional dom Derek Hale can make as much sense as bottom!Derek, based on the way the writer happens to recast canon into fanfiction, and that’s just exciting.
And Stiles, Stiles is wonderfully multifaceted, he’s flaily but focused, mouthy but sensitive… and when you’re writing about the two of them together you get to pick and choose which personality traits to focus on this time, how to make them interact with and react to each other and what kind of sexual dynamic to create between them and why, and it’s so much fun to play around with all that while trying to make sure they stay believably related to their canon counterparts. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we like Sterek so much; they’re both round characters, distinctive yet multi-interpretable enough to stay interesting no matter how many fics we’ve already read and written about them.
