There would always be a time for change. Even when people could be thick as thieves, change was inevitable. But Kaya wasn’t one to believe in all that nonsense. After all, friendship was all about trust and if that never changed, then what was there to ever fear about? But at sixteen, everything looks so much bigger than it actually is. Being a teenager was hard, when your feelings were magnanimous, and one’s skin looked terrible and the fear of things changing that no one could handle. And Kaya was just a girl, after all.
So when her best friend texted her about wanting to talk, a million different scenarios rushed through her head? What in the world could have to talk about? Autumn and Kaya had discussed colleges; they both wanted to go to the same one, which had programmes that both girls were interested in. They had no problems in the boy department; Kaya was happily dating the president of the debate team, and Autumn had never expressed any kind of interest in him. And Kaya was just at her place last week, and the parental unit looked happy. By all accounts, everything was going so well in both their lives, so what was there to talk about?
One might have thought that the blonde girl was overreacting, but Kaya knew her best friend. She knew Autumn would never text her like that unless it was a Code Red emergency. Which meant either Autumn was in love or their friendship was over. She ruminated over these thoughts, on autopilot as she showed up to Autumn’s bedroom door.
“Hey there, baby girl. You texted, and I’m here. What’s up?”
