It's awesome that you wrote the post out! Honestly, a part of me thinks that he's a musician, he makes music, he sings songs, that's it. That's his job. We shouldn't expect him to take political stances or have big socio-political talks. Right? A lot of his fans expect him to talk about everything which he can't. We need to realise that he can't talk about politics and stuff cause his demographic might split and it's not really his place. I do believe that he should talk about climate change (1)
and things that he is passionate about and feels the need to speak up about. Sometimes as fans people expect too much from a singer and we should stop putting those expectations on him. But at the same time, times have changed and every celeb (most anyways) have something they're passionate about and use their platform to do something. So should he. (2)
In all honesty, Shawn signed up to be a singer not an activist. I’m sure he just wants to go on stage and play his guitar without complications. The thing is, we as fans expect more from our idols because of their influence and their platform. Shawn has a combined following of over 79 million people. That is a fuck-ton of people! If he told everyone that followed him to donate $1, I can almost guarantee that a minimum of 10 million will. Which is a shit load of money for whatever cause he’s promoting. That’s why people want him to speak up. He has more reach than all of us combined.
That being said, one thing to remember is that Shawn Mendes at the end of the day is a product that is marketed to us the consumers. I wouldn’t be surprised if his management has tried to tone down the amount of political speak so as to appeal to everyone (Let’s not forget that he is someone’s paycheque). For example, a woman in small racist town in the south is probably not going to allow her 12 year old daughter to see an artist who actively supports causes that she deems wrong or unworthy, but if it’s an artist that just goes on stage and plays guitar, she’d probably be okay with that.
You mentioned that it might not really his place to talk about it certain issues and you’re right. While I would love for him to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement, it’s not something that he knows much about (being a white person) it’s very easy for him to come across as tone deaf or a white saviour as he could be taking away from the people in the movement whose voices need to be heard. So I can understand why he says he needs to do more research (whether he does said research, I don’t know)
What makes climate change different is the fact that he seems to have actively attached himself to that topic. He tried to make his tour more environmentally friendly and he mentioned it a few times in Q&A’s. Climate change is also something that personally affects him unlike the blm movement or feminism (again, white man)
You can see that he’s trying to talk about things he believes in without rocking the boat but sometimes you have to rock the boat.
Shawn has good intentions, Youth wouldn’t exist if he didn’t (the music video is one of his best but I digress) and he just needs to come out and say what he wants without fear of ridicule cause he’s getting ridiculed now for appearing shallow which I honestly don’t think he is.
