Cine: Just Charlie (2017)

Charlie Lyndsay (Harry Gilby) es un talento del fútbol, deporte que ama; tanto que le dan la opción de filmar en un club grande. Su padre (Scot Williams) está en la gloria por esta alegría, compartida con su esposa (Patricia Potter) y su hija mayor, Eve (Elinor Machen-Fortune). Paradójicamente, la novedad no parece bien recibida por Charlie, que ya estaba muy apesadumbrado porque, incómodo con su cuerpo, busca la menor oportunidad de ataviarse con vestimenta femenina.

Cierta noche, el muchacho aprovecha la oportunidad de la ausencia del resto de su familia para bañarse, afeitarse las piernas, pintarse sus labios, usar rímel y vestirse con la ropa de su hermana. Perdido en sus labores, no escucha llegar a sus padres, que lo descubren in fraganti y se llevan la sorpresa de sus vidas. Al fin, admite que cree ser una niña, lo cual despierta la furia de su padre, que ve destrozado su sueño de ver a su hijo convertido en una estrella del fútbol; su madre y hermana, en cambio, parecen intentar comprenderle.

Así y todo, Charlie, que conserva su apodo original, logra iniciar su camino de autoaceptación: su entrenador, Mick Doyle (Peter Machen, guionista del filme) le consigue un puesto en un grupo de fútbol femenino y se atreve a ir a la escuela con su nueva vestimenta. Su realidad despierta no pocas reticencias en ambos lugares e incluso parece espantar a Tommy (Travis Blake-Hall), su mejor amigo de toda la vida.

Una vez más, el cine se mete con un tema delicado y lo resuelve con soltura merced a la pluma de Machen y la sensible dirección de Rebekah Fortune, quien basó la historia de esta película en su propio cortometraje, "Something Blue" (2011); allí el rol de Charlie fue encarnado por Elinor Machen-Fortune, que aquí oficia de hermana del protagonista.

Just Me!

Centrist or Neutral is probably one of the best ways to describe me. I enjoy arguing both sides of a debate to better understand different viewpoints.

In life and relationships, I can be extremely passionate, sometimes ‘til I’m red in the face. Other times I’m rather complacent, although, I almost always have an opinion on a topic being discussed.

At work, I’m almost a different person. Almost being the operative word, since I still carry opinions while remaining professional.

I have a large and amazing Italian family that I am close with, but in which I hold a unique position. As the oldest of the boys in my generation, I am the most outspoken, and will eventually take my father’s spot as the “patriarch”.

My role as the outspoken one is similar in my wife’s family. However, the extended families on both her mom and dad’s sides govern far more liberally. While some traditional gender roles are upheld, the family dynamic is that of equality.

All of my influences throughout my life have shaped me to be a certain way, but life is not over and neither is my personal evolution.
