Strength
Where do you get your strength from? In times that are difficult or hard to navigate through what do you do? I was recently approached by an old friend who asked me how I’ve managed to stay strong during some of the most difficult of experiences. I felt really silly answering it to be honest because I don’t know where I find the strength to weather thru the storms of life.
I. Just. Do.
Sounds easy, but it is quite hard. It is hard not to succumb to every fear you can think of. It is hard not to quit. However, I’ve never been given that option. I’m not a quitter. I am a survivor (que Destiny’s Child).
Twice in my life I nearly drowned. The first time I was about 2-years-old. The second I was about 5. To this day, I have faded memories of what my 2-year-old self can recall from that experience. My eyes open in the water staring at the deep blue nothingness. Saved by my Grandpa pulling me out by my overalls. The second experience was not like that. The second experience I was told not to venture into the center of a friend’s pool. I was having so much fun I wandered into it anyways. I was swimming, but I didn’t realize I was in the center of the pool until someone said I was. At that moment, I began to thrash around afraid to drown. I didn’t though. I was saved by my Mom. Who dove in and grabbed me from the water. Ever since that experience I hate the feeling of chlorine in my nose. It. Is. Awful.
After the second experience I took swimming classes and the first thing you learn when learning how to swim is how to float. (Que line from Stephen King’s ‘IT’- “We all float here.”) The point is that sometimes through life’s storms we can only float or tread water until we know we are safe. I’m doing really well at floating right now. Still there are moments I feel quite seasick.
