Time to save the Planet Posted @hradayshahjudeo . @justice4earth Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado and his wife Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado returned to Sebastião’s childhood home only to be devastated by the barren land that lay before them. It was Lélia’s idea to replant the 1,502 acres of rainforest in the Bulcão Farm in Aimorés, Minas Gerais. Together they founded Instituto Terra. - They planted over 2 million native seedlings of 290 different tree and plant species to encourage the wildlife back to the area. The land is coming back to life, soil erosion has stopped. The 8 natural springs have been replenished, flowing at a rate of 20 litres per minute. 172 bird species have come back, of which 6 are already in the danger of becoming extinct. 33 species of mammals have returned, with two of them being vulnerable and about to be extinct worldwide. @Regran_ed from @justice4earth - SHARE EVERYWHERE: The climate situation is now critical - We have 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe, warns UN - The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. — This landmark report was released on Monday by the IPCC and is the most in-depth, accurate and largest such report on climate change ever and is a urgent wake up call to world leaders. The world is currently 1C warmer than preindustrial levels. Following devastating hurricanes in the US, record droughts in Cape Town and forest fires in the Arctic, the IPCC makes clear that climate change is already happening, upgraded its risk warning from previous reports, and warned that every fraction of additional warming would worsen the impact. At 1.5C the proportion of the global population exposed to water stress could be 50% lower than at 2C, it notes. Food scarcity would be less of a problem and hundreds of millions fewer people, particularly in poor countries, would be at risk of climate-related poverty. - The IPCC maps out four pathways to achieve 1.5C, with different combinations of land use and technological change. Reforestation is essential to all of them as are shifts to electric transport systems and greater adoption of carbon capture technology. Carbon pollution would have to be cut by 45% by 2030 – compared with a 20% cut under the 2C pathway – and come down to zero by 2050, compared with 2075 for 2C. This would require carbon prices that are three to four times higher than for a 2C target.
