     wide-eyed, struck by wonder, she cannot remove her gaze nor turn away, cannot remember lady’s trained propriety. she GIGGLES, turns this way and that to look upon each moving bough, each whispering leaf! thought overtakes her and with wide eyes she turns to him. 

     “can they speak?  - - that is to say, your majesty,  do the trees converse, as your animals do?”

                    ‘      WHAT   do  you  mean  why  doesn’t  he  speak ?      ‘          the  question  seemed  awfully  silly  ,     and  the  answer  felt  so  obvious  he  didn’t  even  feel  the  need  to  give  one.     it  must  have  been  some  sort  of  joke  he  hadn’t  quite  understood    ––––    for  edmund  couldn’t  really  believe  an  animal  could  speak  in  the  same  way  a  human  would  ,     that  would  be  absurd.

                      this obedient canine has  no need  for a leash ;   every  command  given to her is always quickly followed.  it's because of said  obedience  that her pets need not  worry  about where she is  EVERY  second of the day.  she would never leave her home and if she has too, would  never  leave her pet's side.  it's how she has  found  herself here, sitting straight and  REGAL  in front of the boy.  waiting --- waiting for a reaction, waiting for a  command, waiting to be  acknowledged.
