during one of my mission trips back in college we did an activity where everyone got in a straight line and if the statement read out loud applied to you, then you would take a step forward. it’s a cross-cultural training exercise where every single item they read off on the list had to do with your race. “my race or ethnicity is highly represented in the media.” “growing up, i knew many folks of my race or ethnicity who are in the upper middle class.” “i see my race or ethnicity on merchandise items such as post cards or commercials very often.” every time a statement was read, the spread of our line shifted and changed.
i happened to be standing next to two white people during this activity. for the first few statements, i was taking steps with them. things like, “my race or ethnicity has a big percentage in the upper middle class range” kept all three of us moving. however, the longer this went on, the more i couldn’t keep up with them. i knew in my mind that this wasn’t a race — we weren’t competing based on our speed or skill at running ahead — but part of me felt like i was sinking and falling behind each time i couldn’t take a step with them.
on instinct, i grew frustrated at both myself and the system of this exercise as more items were read off and left me further and further behind. i couldn’t do anything to catch up and it was out of my control.
while this is a great example of what it feels like to be a model minority and what it feels like to be in the presence of those more privileged than you. it’s also how i feel about education and those who have achieved a higher one at a more prestigious school. the privilege afforded to them is a reward of greatest honor, something they deserved or paid more for to receive, leaving me behind with nothing but empty fists trying to grasp at their coattails.
I love sy@osaku with all my heart but.. I would love for more content of everything elseeeeeeee
