I know some of you think I am insane for thinking all these characters are actually other characters in disguise but this occurred to me when replying to another post...
Sunrise spent a lot of time explaining why Treekyo had Kikyo's appearance. I think they did this to let the girls and viewers know that sometimes people will look like someone they're not.
Anyway, many people have commented on Jyoka's titty shot in the last episode, calling it fanservice.
I disagree. Whenever Yashahime does weird stuff like that, they are usually giving a clue.
Since she had Indian stylings, I thought she was representing a Buddhist or hindu goddess. And also, they really emphasised the gold jewelry and five purple points of her headpiece. And the jewel on forehead which I think is a callout to a bindi.
I think she's a representative of the goddess Tara. She has a five point crown and wears a lot of gold.
Also the way Jyoka hair is rolled on the sides but has little pointy things at the bottom is a shout-out to her ears and earrings. Most depictions of Tara have the same kind of earrings.
As you can see above, Tara is often portrayed topless, with gold necklaces dangling between her breasts. Like many eastern gods, she has many different versions or avatars. I think the point of the breast shot was to put us in mind of green Tara, her most popular incarnation. Anyone who makes the Jyoka/Tara connection will think of her first.
But I think it's possible she is actually a representation of the much less common violet/purple Tara. Her skin in that scene has a purplish grey undertone and the purple of her jewels was really highlighted.
If she is Purple Tara then I will have to reassess my theory Jyuka is really Riku. I know a lot of y'all aren't buying my perils/parents theory but I think even if it's wrong, Sunrise is associating purple with the mother.
Purple Tara is embodiment of forgiveness and change and that really fits Kagura if she is the mom.
I was going to include the lore surrounding Tara but this post is already too long and I am trying to cut back on my novel length posts. If any of you decide to google her, I reckon her buddhist history will be the most relevant if Jyoka's representation of Tara has any additional significance for the story.
