I never talk about my original writing here (perhaps for fear of plagiarism etc.) but I feel like doing something different and maybe I will look back on these as early conceptions that evolved - so here are some of my favourite characters I've created, in brief outline. Most - but not all - operate within a shared universe of people with supernatural powers or abilities.
A shapeshifter and survivor of an abduction as a child. While she is able to transform body parts into a conception of weapons or tools to defend herself, a major challenge is that she doesn't know enough about anatomy to bring back her original limbs - throughout her arc this explores the nature of personhood and humanity, as well as limits her powers due to her own apprehension
A character who only has the passive power to create a shield barrier, and has to evolve creative ways to make this useful. Through a gruesome experience, they learn that the shield is a static block that does not move with them.
A character who can cast illusions, and later develops the ability to augment their physicality as long as they are facing an opponent who can be deceived. Notably, they are able to grievously injure a foe by striking with an (illusory) 'iron' fist instead of a regular human fist
A character who only has the passive power of invulnerability. Late in their arc, they come into possession of a gauntlet which grants them offensive and telekinetic-esque abilities. They wear the gauntlet increasingly, and eventually it is revealed that the gauntlet is eating their arm in order to power its abilities - but as the character is invulnerable and unable to feel pain, they haven't noticed. (This maybe strays into Ito territory...)
A character who can teleport, but very rarely because it takes a lot of energy. Instead, they pretend to have another power that can be faked as it is similar
A character with magnetism powers who uses this exclusively as a weapons specialist, riding into battle on giant guns and cannons and carrying loose metal on her person/as part of her costumes as a last ditch defense. Although this isn't an uncommon powerset (Magneto being the defining example) I've rarely seen this power (or telekinesis) utilised this way outside of one-off demonstration scenes - and I've always been inspired by a scene from a rarely-remembered X-Men run when Psylocke, newly-gained telekinetic powers, is able to use them to cut and crush, but unable to levitate a coin due to a lack of finesse. It's something I've taken with me in my approach to character creation and limitation.
