02 - fem k-rock pioneers, dreamcatcher
i'm a recovered kpop stan but i still listen to them on the regular lol
Dreamcatcher are a kpop group who literally pioneered female rock in Korea! Not that it was totally unheard of, but they really brought it into the public consciousness. A lot of their stuff has that 'anime opening' light and melodic sound, but they also have some heavier rock music and a lot of edm. Most of the fan favorite songs are pretty stereotypical kpop (still good! check out Odd Eye and Boca), but when you check out their b-sides, the rock sound really comes through. After being together almost 10 years, the members went their separate ways - Handong returning to China, Gahyeon going into acting, Siyeon starting a band (crcktkle), Dami going solo, and Sua/Jiu/Yoohyeon forming a subunit UAU ("yu-a-yu"). Before joining Dreamcatcher, 5 of the members debuted in a cutesy girl group called Minx. The members generally consider it a dark past. It's honestly sad - one time I read an interview from back then, and they kept saying how much they liked metal or something 😭 it was so obvious they didn't want to be there
All the members are incredible vocalists! They all have strongly contrasting vocal tones (my favorites r SiGaDong 🫡) , but it still blends well since their producers are goated.
Get to know Dreamcatcher in 5 songs:
Chase me (Mirror, 2017) - Their debut song! The music video is a cinematic horror where the 7 members terrorize a ghost hunter. The lyrics are all about them fucking with him. The song itself is a rock ballad, mostly piano, drums, and guitar. It has one of my fav rap parts too 🧎➡️ I just wish there was a 2025 ver where Dongie actually got to sing
The Curse of the Spider (Raid of Dream, 2019) - A more high energy rock song with more EDM elements! The 2024 live version of this is insanely hype btw.
Endless Night (Endless Night, 2023) - A Japanese release and my personal favorite Dreamcatcher song! Mid-energy rock song with a lot of electric guitar and high notes. (Lee Gahyeon just one chance please)
Scream (Dystopia: The Tree of Language, 2020) - Probably the peak of their horror concept before they started going the apocalypse route. A fan favorite - pure dark EDM (which I honestly hate 😭 but yk I'm just one person, who gaf). It's loud, so it's super fun at concerts. Devil. Eyes. Come.
Always (Apocalypse: Save us, 2022) - Including this because it's not Dreamcatcher without tearjerker ballads! It's kind of acoustic sounding, mainly piano, synth, and vocals. I love their slower, sentimental songs. It really gives the audience a chance to appreciate the members vocal tones.
Umm stan UAU idk how to end this
