‘But why?’ K2 asked, and if robots could glare you were pretty sure that was the look he was shooting one of the guards today.
‘Someone forgot to oil their joints,’ you teased, patting the guard on the shoulder as you switched shifts with him. The relief overwhelmed his expression as he excused himself, mumbling darkly about robots and wanting Cassian back. ‘Could you try being nicer to them sometimes?’
K2 looked towards you for a moment and then resumed his pacing. ‘Why is it that your kind insist upon asking ridiculous questions?’
‘You know, we’re not the same,’ you murmured, knowing that to him you just weren’t robots. ‘Anyway,’ you said, hastily deciding that it might be worth a slight digression, ‘are we still on for training later?’
‘I don’t know why you insist upon it,’ he said simply, for a moment the harshness of his tone shifting slightly, it was something that you recognised, knew that Cassian would as well. ‘You don’t need it as much as some of the others.’
You sighed, shifting to sit down. ‘Some of us don’t retain things with the same clarity as you, K2, some of us need to keep practicing.’
He nodded, almost as if he understood, before you fell into a companionable silence, glad that your shift had once again coincided with his.
