Background: Orchestrated a series of Brigand attacks on Starbase 13 to push Starfleet to send a starship out the Marrat System. Marrat was located near a sensor-blinding nebula that also had a planet rich in dilithium - Pharos - that Starfleet was keeping secret to avoid a gold rush. When the Enterprise investigated attacks on the Starbase they went to the Lighthouse, a facility on the Pharos that was being built to help navigate local space. Kaaj led a surgical attack on the Enterprise, crippling it but Captain Pike, when the whole scheme dawned on him, evacuated his people from the Lighthouse, warned Kaaj to do the same, before targeting a rich dilithium vein on the surface. The chain reaction throughout the planetscape ensured that Pharos would burn for several decades, doing the job of the Lighthouse naturally. Kaaj would not underestimate Pike again and now had a blood debt on Pike. Varchas departed before Starfleet reinforcements arrived. Kaaj studied his enemy and some weeks later devised a ruse to lure Pike away from the Enterprise by faking a message from Starfleet Command. The lure worked and Varchas found Pike’s shuttle, shooting it down over a remote human colony world. Pike survived the crash and landing parties were sent to bring him in. When this proved difficult, Kaaj began orbital bombardment of the surface until the Enterprise showed up, disabled his weapons and he was forced to retreat.
