Thanks so much for answering my questions! Absolutely loving the new album at this end.
I’m glad to hear that!
On your Facebook page you quote yourself saying that “I built this band to challenge myself”. How has the challenge been so far?
Lately the biggest challenge has been one I never anticipated— fighting to carve out the time to be an artist when there’s a mountain of admin and management duties to keep up with. We are still self-managed, and as Mother Feather has hit a growth spurt in the past year, it’s become a massive full-time job.
How did Mother Feather come to be?
It came through a vivid, life-changing epiphany that cut through a period of listless misery.
How do you prepare for your shows? Your themed costumes and flexible kicks must surely take hours to perfect.
Practice, intention, practice, intention, practice…rinse, repeat.
That leads me on to the next question, where do you find those incredible clothes?
They are sourced from a variety of places and Lizzie and I style everything. We mix a lot of vintage with newer affordable clubwear, but the best is when we get to work with independent designers. We’ve had the pleasure to collaborate with some brilliant designers like Suzanne Rae, King Sarah, Lindsay Hearts, Xango Shola, Vulpinic Vestments. There’s a lot of mixing and matching, Pinterest boards, and photo text exchanges from in front of the mirror.
What have been the biggest changes you’ve felt as a band since you started up?
Getting signed to Metal Blade definitely was a shot in the arm. The timing was really perfect—being an independent band can feel so Sisyphean at times, it was a nice change to get some real support from someone outside of our musical circle here in NYC.
You have several months of touring ahead, how do you prepare yourself for the road?
There’s just so much to do—we just show up and do our best and cross things off the list. I came to the realization that I might not be able to prepare myself for some things until I go through them. I know I can be a little...intense (it's part of my charm!) But rather than ninja myself into it, I’m just trying to be like water.
What has been the best thing about Mother Feather for you so far?
The best thing about Mother Feather is the opportunity to say and do what I mean. The biggest surprise has been the effect that has on others. That takes it to another level of responsibility.
Tell us the last thing you saw, read and listened to.
I’m almost done with Caitlin Moran’s novel, How To Build A Girl. I’m just so glad to live in a world where Caitlin Moran exists. “Lemonade” is what I’ve been watching and listening to—what a profoundly stunning piece of art. Beyonce has got the mic and she is using it. Catharsis ACHIEVED.
How would you describe your band to someone who had never heard of you?
I heard Matt describe us to someone as “AC/DC meets Lady Gaga” the other day.
What can we expect next from Mother Feather?
Songs that rule the world.
If you could be asked any question, what would it be?
One that someone actually wants the answer to and can’t be found on Wikipedia!
Thanks so much!
Thank you, MFer!
