Suga wasn’t sure he had heard right. For one, he’s not looking his best in the least. He’s sweaty and gross and his hair is sticking to his face and he’s so ready for a shower it’s not even funny. This summer was one of the worst by far, and without a car, simply just walking outside seemed like a chore. Being outside because he was a dog walker was another thing all together. He was obligated to.
“I think I’m in love with you,” Kageyama, the owner of a spoiled and rather chubby corgi, said.
Kageyama took the corgi, Ume, from Suga’s hands, fitting her in his arms as he looked at Suga expectantly. Suga shifted on his feet, too self-conscious of his state of being to know how to answer. Kageyama had been a polite enough customer. He was formal, around two years his junior, and happened to be in the same university as him. Only, he still lived with his parents, and Suga had an apartment he shared that he was currently splitting bills over. Suga was momentarily relieved that Ume was his last charge of the day. Kageyama, as Suga found out, looked intimidating because of his frowns. Seeing him say goodbye to Ume when Suga came to pick her up told an entirely different story. (The pout and goodbye pet Kageyama gave her was enough to make Suga’s stomach squirm).
“I, uh,” Suga started. “I’m not sure how to respond, Kageyama.”
Kageyama nodded and ushered Ume into the house. He looked like he wanted to say something more as his mouth seemed to wobble. He ended up blurting out a hurried goodbye and closing the door in Suga’s face. Suga blinked twice before hurrying home.
-
Even brushing Kageyama’s hand when he all but handed him Ume’s leash was getting to Suga. If the sun wasn’t beating down on him from behind, it was pulsing in his hand as Kageyama brushed his knuckles with his fingertips. The pull of several dogs up and down sidewalks and through parks did little to stop his brain from short circuiting. He’d begun noticing too many things about Kageyama. Like, how frazzled his hair looked in the mornings because, though he rose early (probably to practice his setting), he truthfully wasn’t a morning person. He’d simply just been rather dedicated, a trait Suga appreciated in him. It was also the furrow in Kageyama’s brow that made Suga pause. When he was thinking, particularly about his next choice of words, it appeared, and it seemed to give Kageyama’s face a double pout.
When Suga returned later with Ume, Kageyama was again lingering in silence, shyly watching him as he cradled Ume in his arms. Suga hoped the heat from the day explained why his face seemed so red.
“Sugawara-san,” Kageyama began at last. “Will you let me take you out for coffee?”
Suga’s mouth twitched, and a teasing tone was already in his tone of voice. “I hope you mean ice coffee?”
Kageyama looked caught off guard but pleased as he nodded furiously and hugged Ume a little closer. His mouth twitched into a small, perfect smile that made Suga’s heart thump.
“Of course, if that’s what you want. I, uh, can I text you a time and day?”
“You can,” Suga said. “Just for the record, I look a lot better when I’m not sweaty and covered in dog hair.”
Kageyama smiled a little wider. “I think you look just fine either way.”

warnings for references to drinking, and some mentions of vomiting (it’s totally non graphic though)
This is probably a stupid idea.
Somewhere, in the back of his mind, there’s a little voice saying exactly that.
Showing up on a stranger’s doorstep? Bad idea.
Wandering around in a city they weren’t familiar with? Bad idea.
Taking off to wander around in a city they weren’t familiar with, without first convincing Kozume-san to guide them? Bad idea.
Tobio blames all the bad ideas squarely on Hinata, not that he’d really notice or care at this point, vibrating as he is with excitement.
“Why can’t they hear us knocking?” he says, pounding on the door once again.
“It’s a party, dumbass,” Tobio answers. “You can hear the music from out here. How do you expect them to hear your pathetic knocking?”
“It’s not pathetic! My fists are small, that’s all! Why don’t you try knocking, then?”
“No, this was a stupid idea anyway. We don’t even know these people-”
“We were invited! Don’t you want to see Suga-san?”
“You-”
The door swings open abruptly, stopping their squabble dead in its tracks. There’s a brief moment where they’re only surrounded by the noise from the party, before Hinata shouts, loud enough to be heard over the music, and launches himself towards Sugawara.
“You guys!” Suga is saying, “You’re here! How are you here? Why are you here?”
“We came to see your game!” Hinata answers. “We took a train this afternoon, and Kenma picked us up at the station!”
“Oh gosh, you two! Hinata, and Kageyama-”
“Hello, Sugawara-san-”
Tobio’s halfway through a bow, but Suga, with Hinata still wrapped around one arm, tilts over and hugs him. His chin meets Suga’s shoulder, and the force of the contact makes his teeth rattle together, but Suga’s got a grip on his sweatshirt, and insists on pulling him closer, until he can halfheartedly pat him on the back.
“God, Kageyama, did you get taller?”
“No-”
“He did! He came back from summer break and scared all the first years because he’d loom over them with a scowl on his face!”
Suga untangles his fingers from Tobio’s sweatshirt, but only moves his hand to squeeze at his shoulder. He’s grinning, when he leans back, that same wide, beam of a smile from high school.
He’s also swaying a bit, sagging against Hinata, like his limbs can’t quite keep him upright. Tobio realizes, belatedly, that he’s probably been drinking. That’s a college thing, isn’t it?
“Well, I don’t know how you two heard about this party-”
“Your number 7! He invited us when I told him we came to see you.”
“Gosh, of course he did. Well, come in, anyway. I’ll introduce you to the rest of my teammates.”
Suga trips over a board on the porch, almost dragging Hinata down with him. He manages to stagger upright, partly through the combined effort of Hinata heaving him up, and Tobio clutching the back of his shirt. He giggles throughout it all.
College is.
Different.
Granted, Tobio’s not actually in college, not yet, but the atmosphere of the party alone is enough to truly express the difference between college and high school.
Not that the party’s really a shining example of what college’s supposed to be like.
Suga’s Number 7 had immediately tried to hand the two of them plastic cups with something utterly foul-smelling in them. Hinata’d almost managed to gulp his down, before Suga plucked both cups out of their hands, and set them on a side table.
“You’re too little,” he’d said, smiling when Hinata squawked.
Suga had introduced them to a few teammates, a few friends. The whole thing is crowded, and loud. Tobio watches Suga’s face grow steadily redder as they make rounds, from the heat inside the house or from alcohol, he’s not sure. Both, maybe. The conversations grow harder to follow, although Hinata seems to be having no trouble keeping up with the mesh of words and gestures and obnoxious barks of laughter.
Tobio’s not sure how much time has passed, but he finds himself outside again, having discovered a back door leading to a tiny stoop. Really, it’s not much to sit on, and there’s nothing but dark woods behind the house, but it’s quiet, and it’s peaceful, and it’s just the place to take a break from the bustle of the party.
He pulls out his phone, puts it away when there are no new messages to check. The air is chilly, summer’s last lingering heat starting to dissipate when the sun sets, but it feels nice on his warm skin.
He’s just starting to shiver when the door behind him opens, hitting him squarely in the spine.
“Found you,” Suga croons, slipping through the door.
Tobio straightens out, Suga’s hand coming to rest on his head as he makes his wobbly way down the stairs. Tobio has to scoot a little farther over, when Suga sits down, but even still, they’re sitting knee-to-knee, the steps not quite wide enough to accommodate the two of them.
“I brought you this,” Suga says, handing him a soda.
“Oh, thank you.”
“Mmm.”
They lapse into silence, the faint noise of the party behind them, early autumn crickets chirping in the darkness in front of them. Suga’s squirming beside him, bouncing his foot slightly on the step. His cheeks are still red.
“Sugawara,” he says, clearing his throat, “good game tonight.”
Suga turns towards him, smiling so brightly his eyes have crinkled.
“It was, wasn’t it?”
Suga laughs, airy, carefree. Tobio can feel it, echoing through his own body.
“You have a good team. It’s very easy to see how well you all work together.”
“Mm, yeah. It’s nice. Although-”
Suga tilts a little closer, nudging his mouth towards Tobio’s ear.
“-don’t tell anybody, but I didn’t play at all my first year.”
“It’s a college team, that’s not unusual-”
“No, I mean- not at all. I didn’t. I didn’t try out until this year.”
“What? I don’t understand.”
Suga sighs, and shifts so that his cheek rests on Tobio’s shoulder.
“It wasn’t the same, without all you guys. And there was all this pressure, because I’d come from a winning high school, and I thought- I thought too much about disappointing my teammates, I guess.”
“Well, that’s dumb.”
Suga giggles.
“I know it is. I missed out on a whole year’s worth of great teammates. ‘S alright, though, I realized how dumb it was after I finished up my first year, so it’s all good now.”
“Hm.”
“Are you going to university, Kageyama?”
“I-”
Was he?
He asks himself the same question constantly. Ever since the start of his last year of high school, that question has wandered through his head at least once a day. As much as he doesn’t want it to, time’s ticking down quickly. He’s only got, what, eight months of high school left, and then he’ll graduate, and be expected to move his life in some direction.
It’s hard to think about.
“I don’t know,” he settles on, after a minute. Suga hums quietly beside him.
“That’s alright. It’s a lot to think about.”
“It is.”
“But, you could come here, you know? If you wanted to.”
Tobio frowns slightly; he’s not sure what Sugawara means by that, besides the obvious. There’s something funny in the tone of his voice, that Tobio can’t figure out.
“I could.”
“I mean, it’s a great school. The classes and the professors have all been great, and the volleyball club’s not too shabby. And-”
Suga sits up, the warm press of his body against Tobio’s now cooling rapidly.
“-I mean, it’d be nice to have someone from home here with me.”
He laughs, sharp and sudden, and Tobio startles at the sudden burst of noise.
“I’m sorry, Kageyama. You shouldn’t have to be here to witness me being drunk and sentimental. But if you want, I can show you the campus tomorrow. You and Hinata are staying with Kenma tonight, aren’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Cool. No pressure, or anything, but-”
“Okay.”
“Really?” Suga says. There’s a note of eagerness in his voice.
“Yeah. No harm in checking it out, right?”
“Y-yeah. Yeah! Ah, that’s so great.”
Suga stumbles to his feet, landing in wet grass.
“Just call me, or text me tomorrow when you’re up, and I’ll, uh- oh goodness- I’ll meet up with you.”
“Okay. Um, Sugawara?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you alright?”
“Oh! Yeah, I’m fine. I just gotta go throw up real quick. Do you think they’ll mind if I borrow their bushes or something?”
Tobio feels his throat dry up, probably about the same way Suga’s is at that moment. Even in the darkness, Tobio can see the way his face goes gray, and his eyes go a bit glassy.
It’s an experience he never, ever thought he would have, helping a former senpai puke in a stranger’s backyard in the middle of the night. Suga apologizes profusely, even as he struggles with an unsettled stomach, but still manages to pull another drink out of Hinata’s hand as Tobio guides him through the kitchen.
“I'm really sorry, Kageyama. I'm glad I got to see the both of you, but, yeah. That wasn't such a fun ending.”
“It's fine. It, uh, happens in college.”
He makes sure Suga gets upstairs without incident, even though they both discover the bathroom is otherwise occupied.
“Kageyama, you really don't need to go to all this trouble. This isn't, unfortunately, the first time this has happened.”
“I just want to make sure you're alright.”
Suga sits on the floor, having slid down the wall across from the bathroom door. He looks up at Tobio with wide eyes.
“You're awfully sweet, Kageyama,” he says. Tobio feels a blush, hot on his face.
“Y-yes, well, I want to make sure you're okay, if we’re going to hang out tomorrow.”
“You still want to hang out with me? Even after I almost made you vomit as well?”
“It's not that big a deal.”
“It's gross.”
“Well, Hinata's thrown up on everybody on our team, me included, so. It's really not so bad.”
There's a funny look on Suga’s face, his mouth quirked up in a half smile. Tobio squirms under the scrutiny.
“Kageyama!” he hears from the bottom of the stairs. Hinata waiting for him.
“You better get going,” Suga says.
“Yeah.”
“Call me anytime tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
“I know a nice little tea place we can stop, too. If you want.”
“That sounds nice.”
Suga smiles.
“I'm glad I got to see you. You and Hinata.”
“Me, too.”
Hinata waiting at the bottom of the stairs, tapping his foot with impatience.
“You tell me that we're leaving, but make me wait ten minutes.”
“Suga needed help.”
Hinata still scowls, and purposely steps on the heels of his shoes as they both trip out the front door. He forgets to be angry, however, after a few minutes, chattering on about his plans with Kenma the next day.
“You can come, too, I suppose.”
“I'm busy tomorrow.”
“Ehh?!”
“I made plans with Suga.”
“What? I wanna come! What are you gonna do?”
“You can't come,” Tobio says, surprised by his own burst of defensiveness.
“Why? What are you gonna do? Is it special training?”
Tobio’s a little confused by how much he wants it to just be the two of them, himself and Suga. It's a thought he decides to examine later, when his brain isn't going fuzzy with a need for sleep.
