ANYTIME, MY FRIEND, ANYTIME…. thank you for sending me this bc i have a lot of Thoughts about how they met and fell in love but never knew when to post them?? putting this under a readmore because it got very long (i put the first half of it in bullets so it’s easier on the eyes) ~>

they met in college in tokyo, where aura was studying robotics and metis was studying abroad – maybe as a research assistant or TA for one of aura’s mentors?? smth like that

anyway they bonded quickly over the fact that they both had english-speaking family in europe, because what are the odds, right?, and it very quickly turned into the kind of friendship where they could talk to each other about *anything*

metis was always very quiet and emotionally guarded, but she was still a wonderful listener – every once in a while when they’d hang out at their favorite café on campus, metis would offer up a thought or memory of her own & follow it up with “you know, you’re the only person i’ve ever told about that?” and it would make aura’s heart beat so so so fast

sooo aura fell for metis very hard, very quickly ((because that is what we lesbians often do. i can confirm)) but she fought it/tried to suppress it for a long time, because uh. well. she was extremely disappointed to find out that metis had recently gotten married to athena’s father, and that they were going to try to start a family once metis returned to the states

metis talked to aura about her husband sometimes and aura hated that she couldn’t even dislike this guy because he actually seemed very nice. aura frequently complained about the husband over the phone to teenage simon anyway because how dare he

they stayed in touch over the phone/email after metis moved back to california, discussing their projects and plans and families and whatnot

athena’s father got sick and passed away shortly after athena was born. metis grew even more distant and guarded after that, and it scared aura a lot – partly because she was worried for metis’ health, as a grieving single mother, but also because she (maybe selfishly) didn’t want to lost the metis she knew & never really got over her romantic feelings for

so it was a DREAM COME TRUE a couple years later when metis called aura out of the blue and said “hey, i was thinking about artificial emotional intelligence and came up with a project you might be interested in”

actually several of aura’s dreams came true that day lmao

aaand that more-or-less brings us up to the Space Center Family timeline ((simon joins them after he’s graduated, when athena is 8 or 9; aura introduces him to metis bc of the psychology thing and that’s how that mentorship gets started))

their relationship is a Very Slow Burn that’s made even slower by three things: 1) they haven’t seen each other in person in a few years, so they’ve got to get used to each other again; 2) there’s a little kid (and later, a little brother) running around, taking their attention away from each other; and 3) metis is burdened with the question of whether or not she really wants to move on to a new relationship after the loss of her husband, who she thought she’d be spending the rest of her life with

eventually of course she decides she’s okay with it and that she really, really does want to be with aura, but navigating the guilt & nostalgia is difficult and takes a lot of time. aura understands that, and she only wants metis to be with her when she’s ready, but aura is also unfortunately plagued with the hereditary Blackquill Family Attitude Problem™ so she is very romantically frustrated 10,000% of the time and poor simon gets an earful of it pretty much every night after metis and athena have gone to bed. i mean aura never tries to pressure metis into anything!! don’t get me wrong there i just mean aura keeps waiting for metis to make Moves and she almost never does and it makes aura want to scream daily/gayly. (here’s a drabble i wrote a couple years ago about one such instance, since it’s relevant to the topic at hand…….)

sorry anon i know this got kinda bittersweet here at the end but!!! i love these two and i think their relationship has a lot of complexity to it once you fill in the blanks that were left in the actual dual destinies script. anyway now they’re both alive and stable and married and happy and athena loves her gay moms. that’s not a headcanon that’s just straight up canon. i work for capcom so i know.
