“You’re not leaving,” Noa said.

Kai still had their forehead pressed against the top of the steering wheel, and they made no move to show they’d even heard her.

“Kai." She prodded them with an elbow. "Hey."

"Ugh."

"Come on."

Kai sighed and straightened up. “No,” they said finally. “No, I’m not leaving.”

"So you're in here because...?"

“It’s comfy. It’s cosy,” Kai said, at which point a single, impeccably-timed drop of rain fell from the crack in the roof and landed squarely on their nose. They felt inclined to backtrack. "It's familiar," they said instead. "Not much else is."
