Aww, would you look at this. It's ruining my life.
It's 1999 anime only and it shall be damned. Look at Mito, she's freaking blushing. Also there's a scene that goes "Gon needs a father" then cuts back to Kite. Hmmmmmmmm
I'm asking, where are my people? I know, 2011 did Kite dirty but they're both like parents to Gon.
A normal day in the Freecss residence when your dad is a reverse scarecrow
Bonus: Mito San not being a fan
speak to yourself often and see what you have to say. be a little kinder and watch yourself grow
Ah yes, my hxh OTP
How to make stars align at home while planets align above.
It's caimito ("star apple") season!
Passion(fruit)
“What’s your passion?” If you’re here, you probably have the same question as me. When are we going to stop asking this question?
The bombardment of questions at family gatherings and the tone of disappointment when the answer doesn’t match the ideals ingrained in their heads. Well, I’m not here to tell you it gets better, but I am trying to persuade you to rethink what passion is.
It doesn’t need to be life-altering. (Wow, what? Such an insightful thought!) I know; I’m a genius. But truthfully, that’s all there is to it; we need to stop overthinking it. We are constantly reading about people having passion projects, their efforts to plant more trees than there are people, people who want to cure every disease known to man, etc., etc., etc. But we don’t need to think that far out. We’re so pressured by the idea that we need to be unique, that we need to have something that makes us the best of the best but realistically, let’s think about it. Someone has to be the worst of the worst.
Now, this isn’t a post to challenge you to be the worst of the worst, but it’s a sign to stop overthinking it. Passion projects don’t need to be life-changing; they just need to be enjoyable. Don’t believe me? Well, I’ll introduce you to one of mine.
Fruit. (Yes, you read that right.)
Now before you start getting confused, I can explain.
I am an avid lover of fruit. There’s something just so satisfying and refreshing about having a fresh bowl of fruit after dinner or just as a snack-- they’re sweet, healthy, and quite frankly, there are so many different types I would never get tired of them. And that’s where my passion starts.
As someone who constantly switches goals, has hobbies galore, and is more adventurous than my current bank account allows-- I needed something that would be fun, delicious, and cheaper than taking a new flight every few weeks. So, one day after eating the most delicious strawberry in my entire life, finding a new fruit in my local Asian grocery store, and being inspired by that one scene in Ratatouille where Remy eats the cheese and grape together to have the most beautiful symphony in his head-- I decided my new passionate goal would be to try every single fruit in the world. (Dream big, am I right?)
Why am I sharing this with you?
There are so many people out there who are overwhelmed by society, the constant differing opinions, and judgmental stares that I want to create a sort of unity of everyone feeling a little outcasted or a little out of the ordinary. We don’t need world-altering, opinion-changing decisions to rule every aspect of our lives, and that’s something we have trouble understanding from a young age. We’re told that we should shoot for the stars, that our best needs to be better, and we’re faced with people who seem better than us in multiple ways. So, if you’re a little scared to branch out and be a little different, have an ambitious but only self-serving passion, I’m here to show you that you’re not alone, and we’re certainly not going to be the first.
So, my ambitious project is fruit, to try every fruit in the world, and even if I’m not even close to done, I’m still enjoying each step that I’ve taken to achieve it. So, here’s a step on my journey that I want to share with you.
So, here’s step one at tucking you in my metaphorical backpack for this adventure.
Today, I’ve tried a Starapple! More often called a Kaimito in Filipino, it’s a purple or green round fruit with a bright purple interior. It’s squishy, like an overripe peach. It has a tough but smooth skin covering it. It tastes nothing like an apple and probably nothing like a star, contrary to its name. But it gets its name because if you cut it in half horizontally, the almond-like seeds (they’re not edible even if they look like it, I promise) and the casing look like a white star in the middle of the dark purple. Well, purple for the purple one and white for the green one (I’m personally team purple, but they’re both good). I personally think this is one of the cooler fruits I’ve eaten in my life (sincerely, that purple is wicked cool). Surprisingly, if you like frosting, you’ll probably like this. The white juice of the Kaimito tastes and looks a little like condensed milk, just more refreshing, and I could compare the taste of the inside to something akin to mangosteen! Or if you’ve never had one of those, I would say somewhat like a plum, but not exactly. You’ll have to try it and confirm that for yourself.
When I was eating my Kaimito after dinner, my parents told me about their history with them. Being a first-generation Asian-American growing up in America, I’ve been a little detached from my own culture. Still, with all of the Filipino fruits I try, my parents always try to tell me how they enjoyed them in their childhood. With this, it’s no different. With this specific fruit, there wasn’t much to tell, however. My mother told me stories of how she grew up with Kaimito trees growing beside her house. Every summer, when they were filled with fruit, they would take baskets and bags out to the trees and pick all of the ones they could fit in the bag, breaking into a few to enjoy the fruits of their labor (pun intended). While I won’t be able to have that same experience picking fruits in the hot and humid Filipino weather every summer, I can imagine how fondly she remembers those moments. But with this goal of mine, I hope I can start making my own memories with each of these fruits.
So the moral of this story is to try something new, make that interest into a passion, whether it be fruit or saving the world-- it’ll have a bigger effect on your life than you think it ever could.
