Alex wants control over Sonny. He wants to blackmail him, dangle a golden treat in front of him and pull it out at the last second. Alex wants Sonny to be dependent on him. He looks up to sonny for creating a machine that he(alex) was almost able to recreate, for having a vision he himself shared. But right now he is nothing more than a wild animal to fuck around with.

As you've seen, Alex is a hunter, especially a bear hunter. He loves nothing more than causing distress to his prey. As a hunter, he fucks around with the animal's senses before putting it down. With Sonny, well, more of the same but in a different way. Since Sonny has the brain of a human, he is more fun to fuck around with. Alex will surely enjoy the shit out of being the only one who can relay information back to the bear. As I said in the ask, If he can't snake his way into Sonny's side, might as well make him dependent.
