Here is a slightly edited version of what was asked:
I am biracial Kalaallit; recently I was asked to portray an indigenous north american woman in a movie they are filming in Europe. It is a small part, but regardless- i want to ask what your opinion is on the matter. I did reach out to my American indigenous friends with the same question, but they are my friends, so I feel they say ‘go for it’ because of that. Since following your blog, I know you are a no nonsense woman, and you speak fairly even if harshly. I want to know your honest opinion. In my heart, I sort of feel it would be wrong...
It is a movie/documentary about colonialism. From the little part of the script that i got, my part would be around the Pequot war and i would be playing it says and i quote ‘mohegan woman’
I have a few lines, before the war, when the mohegan tribe and pequot tribe were starting to have increasing tensions with the english colonists
I don’t think or have any knowledge of a native being involved in the documentary. From what i got and i asked, it is meant to increase awareness about the genocide committed against the First Nation people. It seems legit historically (though ofc, i am no historian) but I still feel like I would be stealing…or not stealing…idk…taking something that is not mine
I know that I might get upset if they made a movie about Greenland and yet hire other indigenous people to play mine, in certain circumstances. I did try to say something to this effect, but the movie is being produced in central europe and they said and I quote “not many American indigenous people around here”. While that might be true, it still sounds like an excuse."
