gentle reminder that books can be tools of a movement, but I encourage everyone recommending The Broposal as a political stance to also think about other ways you can help. While I appreciate the love, allyship should not start and end with reading fiction. Some tips:

If anyone asks if you know your coworkers/neighbors/friends/etc immigration status, YOU KNOW NOTHING. If you are in public and see ICE, do whatever you can so everyone else knows they're there. If you have an easy exit (or if you're white/otherwise safe) just shout LA MIGRA

This works better if you're white, but you could also channel your inner karen and loudly show concern about why ICE is there. "Thank you for keeping this place safe from ILLEGALS!" anything that will set off alarm bells for people who might not have noticed who's there.

If you see any hotlines or reporting services pop up that let people report "suspicious activity" blow up those hotlines. Call over and over, leave messages, report every tiny thing. Waste their time. Make it difficult and expensive to sort through the reports.

I think what Belle does really well is how it actually portrays "saving" someone from abuse.

Suzu is fully aware that she cannot stop the abuse that Kei and his brother are going through. In A Million Miles Away, she doesn't sing the abuse away, but uses her voice to scope out where Kei and Tomo are so that she can actually fucking go and help them.

Even if she hadn't stopped their dad from hurting them anymore and child protective services hadn't done anything in order to help the brothers, just knowing that Suzu fucking CARED would have helped in some way.

Do you know how much it matters to someone when your struggle is acknowledged whenever every-fucking-one denies what is happening? It's like feeling blood flow back into a limb after having extreme pins and needles.

That's why the whole "I'll help you, I'll help you, I'll help you" scene is so important. Kei had every right to not believe Suzu. And by way of that, Suzu learned that if she REALLLLYYYY wanted to help, she would have to go above and beyond and she couldn't just give them a good song.

Most of the time, abuse cannot be prevented towards children. But just having someone listen to you and acknowledge what happened even when you yourself--the abused--do not believe what you are saying, gives you slight hope that you aren't actually going crazy.

the romance between fitz and molly got on my nerves a bit. don't get me wrong; i really liked molly's character at the beginning of assassin's apprentice, as well as her dynamic with fitz. she was a rascal. later, we saw her transformation into a strong young woman, despite having a drunkard father and all the business on her head. fitz had a crush on her, which was fine, but later, their relationship boiled down to secret meetings for sex ( ik i'm putting it down a bit, but i was hoping for a different development of this relationship i think). maybe it's because i'm generally picky about romances, but i just didn't like it.

That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.

That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing

That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones

That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to

The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.

The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.
