as typical for the studies I do, I tried to work in some original details to make something that works with my OC verses. However, due to a conflux of inspiration at the time, I ended up creating a new background element instead.
lore: The Magpies are the backup talent of the Magnificent Mags' Traveling Menagerie. Each Magpie is a soul that Mags has contracted to her circus, typically recruiting performers that have been brought up in an oppressive society in order to liberate them. Magpies are free to adapt their form to whatever suits their mood or the performance best, typically adopting the guise of the lead performer in whatever act they are assisting. Magpies that have fully come into their own can develop into lead performers themselves, as is the case with Faux, but many are content to support the circus from the shadows and leave the performing to the living.
As long as the circus exists, their souls will persist as well, bound to the spreading of joy and wonder to any they meet. Should a Magpie wish to terminate their contract and finally pass on to the afterlife, they may do so at any time by choosing to cast off their nose.
