Kamal Haasan Stands Firm Amid ‘Thug Life’ Ban Row Over Language Remark
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan finds himself at the center of a linguistic and political controversy after remarks he made about the Kannada language’s origins. During the audio launch of his upcoming film Thug Life, Haasan stated that “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” a comment that has triggered protests in Karnataka and calls for a ban on the film’s release across the state.
Pro-Kannada organizations and activists have expressed strong objections to Haasan’s statement, demanding a public apology. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has since warned of a state-wide ban on Thug Life unless the actor apologizes. The KFCC is expected to hold a crucial meeting to take a final call on the film’s release.
Meanwhile, Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has rallied behind him with a poster campaign across Chennai. The posters carry messages in Tamil like “Love will never apologise,” “He said what the world already knows,” and “Truth will never bow down its head,” clearly indicating that the party is standing by Haasan’s statement.
Haasan remains firm in his stance and has refused to issue an apology, stating that he will only do so if he believes he is genuinely at fault. Sources close to the situation suggest that renowned film distributor Rockline Venkatesh is expected to meet Haasan to mediate and possibly persuade him to reconsider, highlighting the potential financial fallout if Thug Life is blocked in Karnataka.
To mitigate the escalating tension, the South Indian Artistes Association is also reportedly playing a mediatory role. At the same time, Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court, seeking legal assurance for the release and safety of screenings of his film in the state.
As the controversy grows, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Thug Life will see a smooth release in Karnataka or face prolonged legal and political hurdles.
