July 2, 2021 | To Scotland, With Love
I finished reading To Scotland, With Love (2007), by Karen Hawkins, and there was an Egyptian mention, specifically “a cold cloth soaked in Egyptian milk for her forehead.” What is Egyptian milk? To note, this story is set during the regency era in England.
According to Public Health Nigeria, Egyptian milk, “also known as Kamana milk,” is a “whitening milk [...] made with [...] bearberry extracts, lactic acid, licorice root, emulsifying wax, bees wax, olive oil, honey, bee propolis extract, water, critric [citric?] acid, royal jelly, [and] lavender oil. These ingredients combine to give the skin its brightening and attractive tone.”
Apparently it “became really famous after historians and archaeologists [...] proved that [...] Cleopatra” used it/had milk baths (“on a daily basis”).
The article explains that “when milk sours, [...] lactose is converted by bacteria into lactic acid,” which, when “applied to the skin,” causes the skin’s “surface layer to peel off, leaving new, smoother, blemish-free skin.”
The rest of the article touches on the “side effects of Egyptian milk” (e.g., allergies), “the use of Egyptian milk for skin conditions” (e.g., for treating eczema, but “more research is needed”), “fake Egyptian milk” (e.g., beauty products that are just whitening chemicals, containing “hydroquinone, mercury, and corticosteroids”), “skin bleaching’s [...] roots in prejudice,” whether “milk baths safe” and “what types of milk [you can] use in a milk bath.”
This article got me thinking ... milk baths for (adult) eczema, hmm. According to Healthline, though:
As such, for now, I will not partake in a milk bath.
