Hey, everyone! I am super excited to present the story I wrote for the @kaminaribigbang! Be sure to check out the art my partner @natsudorkoneel did, and enjoy!
Foreword: ““It’s not about that! I am a psychic!” Kinoko proclaimed, jamming her thumb into her chest. The rest of the girls exchanged confused glances as they stood, looking at Kinoko warily.”
Chapter 1: “There was a small gasp from the silver-haired girl standing by the teacher’s desk. Around her head floated erasers and chalk, and she had a strange white aura around her body.”
Chapter 2: ““I’m not a ghost,” she sighed. “I’m a telekinetic. You two have been indulging too much in that girl’s fantasies…””
Chapter 3: ““Are you done?” Reiko interrupted, her tone blase and unimpressed. Kinoko flinched at the harshness of her voice, a small gasp coming from her parted lips. “Really, all you’re doing with these outrageous stories of yours is inciting fear. It’s really immature of you.””
Chapter 4: “Reiko kept her head down as she proceeded to an empty cubby. She slipped out of her tennis shoes and set them in the cubby, trading them for the soft white slippers. As she turned, one of the girls standing nearby angrily hissed, “Freak!””

Chapter 4: Damage Control
The next day, Denki and Hanta found Reiko standing before the entrance to the school. She wrung her hands nervously as she gazed at the concrete arch, her eyes wide like she was considering that it would collapse upon her no sooner than she passed underneath it. The few students mulling around in the courtyard cast fervid glances at her; they weren’t discreet about their whispered gossip, staring right at her while they leaned in close to utter insults behind raised palms.
“Reiko!” Denki called, breaking away from his best friend’s side to trot up to her. When she looked at him, he could see uncertainty and fear swimming in her eyes. Several bandages covered the slices on her cheeks, but he could still tell that her face was even paler than usual.
“Denki… Have you heard what they’ve been saying about me?”
Denki grimaced at her question. Social media had lit up overnight. Rumors of Reiko’s supernatural abilities were flying everywhere, so much so that the local news had even taken notice of the spooky happenings and was trying to gain permission to do a morning news special. The comments about the lunchroom debacle were fierce, some even going as far to say that Reiko was an attempted murderer! Denki hadn’t even known where to start with damage control, and though his inboxes had been flooded with questions, he’d muted everything and just lied in bed wondering what to do.
“Denki… What if…” she started.
“Don’t even go there,” Denki interrupted, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder. “I know you didn’t break the window. Something weird is going on at this school, but it’s not your fault, Reiko. Don’t listen to what anyone says!”
Her eyes widened slightly, and then a small smile graced her lips. She reached up to gently lay her hand over his, and it took all his willpower not to squeal like a little girl. There was a matter of a very despondent Reiko, after all.
“Thank you, Denki. I appreciate it.”
They walked together into the school, with the two boys flanking Reiko. As they walked into the crowded entryway, where the students were changing into their slippers, the pleasant rumble of conversation vanished in an instant. Reiko kept her head down as she proceeded to an empty cubby. She slipped out of her tennis shoes and set them in the cubby, trading them for the soft white slippers. As she turned, one of the girls standing nearby angrily hissed, “Freak!”
“Hey!” Denki barked and stepped quickly in front of Reiko to shield her with his taller frame. “You don’t have any proof of anything, so knock it off! There were tons of people there by that window. How do you know I didn’t break it?” he challenged, jamming his thumb into his sternum. Of course, implicating himself probably wasn’t the brightest idea, but he was just so hopping mad! “So shove it, will ya?”
The girl’s face reddened with embarrassment, and she ducked her head, hurriedly marching away with her friends. Everyone else in the entryway avoided Denki’s impudent glare, and they didn’t say anything else about Reiko, either. Denki felt her hand curl into the bottom of his shirt, and he looked over his shoulder to give her a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let anyone get away with saying something bad about you while I’m around,” he promised. His heart did a satisfied little flip as her cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink and her eyes glittered appreciatively.
“Thank you, Denki…”
She continued to cling close to him as they proceeded into the school proper. Denki intended to escort her to class; however, when they arrived, before they were met by the principal and vice principal. Denki gawked at the two men in confusion, while Reiko huddled behind him, a small whimper bubbling from her throat. It was weird, but Denki was not one to be deterred.
“Uh, can we help you?” he asked, crossing his arms. A few people had poked their heads out of the classrooms to ogle at the administrative personnel waiting outside the classroom, and they gasped at Denki’s complete lack of respect. The principal snorted and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, but Denki’s smart mouth wasn’t exactly unknown to the staff at the high school, so he let it slide in the interest of getting straight down to business.
“Miss Yanagi, there are some matters we wish to discuss with you.”
Denki felt her hands dig into the fabric of his shirt, pulling it taut against his shoulders. Scowling, he planted his feet and threw his arms out on either side of him in a clear defensive position.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for the rumor mill!” he snapped. “You’ve got no proof that the window broke because of Reiko!”
“Mister Kaminari, you were present at the incident. Surely you can see that the timing was rather convenient.”
“Yeah, but what about Kinoko?” he challenged. “She has openly stated she has ESP powers! Why is Reiko being singled out?”
“We have talked to Miss Komori at length, and though she has psychic abilities, they do not fall into the realm of breaking windows,” the vice principal countered.
“What a load of crap!” Hanta cried, jumping in with an accusatory finger. “You’re just gonna take what she says at her word?”
A crowd had gathered now, encircling the three students and the two adults. Whispers floated on the air, and Denki was pleased to see that doubt was beginning to circulate about Reiko’s dangerous psychic powers. Not that he needed any more reason to defend the girl, who was now pressing her face between his shoulder blades and smearing the fabric with tears.
“That’s right!” Denki huffed and crossed his arms. “I know what it is! You want an answer that’ll satisfy the media, and you intend to use Reiko as a scapegoat!” The uncomfortable look that the two men exchanged was all the proof Denki needed. However, Kinoko chose this moment to shoulder her way through the crowd, stepping in-between the principal and vice principal to point at Reiko. Tears glittered in the corners of her eyes, and her acting skills just made Denki all the more disgusted.
“How dare you! She attacked me; I know she did!”
“Not so fast,” Hanta interrupted. He stood beside Denki with one hand on his hip and the other tucking his chin into the webbing between his thumb and forefinger in a pose as smug as his smirk. “Kinoko, you’ve said time and time again that the ghosts you claim haunt the school feed off negative energy. I would say the argument between you and Reiko was pretty negative— so, how do you know that it wasn’t the ghosts that shattered the window in response to the energy around you two?”
“Holy crap, Hanta, that’s brilliant!” Denki hissed, and Hanta just nodded in self-satisfaction.
“I… I…” Kinoko stammered and took a step back. Her face began to pale, and she fidgeted incessantly with her hands, twiddling her fingers and playing with her clothes. “I didn’t think of that, I guess… But…”
“That proves it!” Denki asserted with another firm point at the two men. “You can’t definitively pin the incident on Reiko, so you can’t punish her!”
“By the way, if you want to ignore this—” Hanta started, and Denki looked over to see him procure a small camera from within the collar of his shirt. “I’ll release this to the media, and I think the view of who the victim is will quickly change, hmm? Imagine how much flak the school will get for expelling Reiko for something she didn’t do…”
“Hanta Sero, how dare you try to extort us!” the vice principal snapped, and as he moved to march over, his colleague stopped him with an arm. The principal pinched the bridge of his nose with a weary sigh, and it almost made Denki feel bad, how tired he looked. Almost— he really wasn’t in the mood to forgive anybody who attacked Reiko without proof.
“You’ve made your point. We won’t pursue any action against Reiko. We were hasty in our effort to cull the media coverage. I’ll have to find some other way to satisfy them.”
Well, if Denki was waiting for a green light, that was it.
“Then allow me!” he crowed, stepping forward while splaying a hand over his chest. “Let me start my paranormal investigation club! I’ll get to the bottom of what’s going on in this school, and you can report that to the media. I can probably even stop the haunting, too!”
“What makes you think that we’ll entrust such an important job to a couple of high schoolers?” the vice principal snapped.
“Because I offered to do it, duh!” Denki said matter-of-factly. “Who knows how long it’ll take to find a professional paranormal investigation crew to do it? And in the meantime, weird things will keep happening and the media circus will get worse!” Denki looked to the principal, who was staring levelly at him with a thoughtful hand on his chin. “I can do it! Let me prove that my club can do a good job!”
“... All right,” the man consented with a nod. While Denki cheered, the vice principal looked in dismay at his boss, who ignored his very obvious objection. “I will shut the school down for one day and allow you to investigate. If you can get to the bottom of the haunting and put a stop to it, I’ll recognize your club’s value as legitimate and give you all the resources you need to establish a real paranormal investigation team.”
“Yahoo! You got it! I’ll clear this haunting, just you watch!” he cheered, throwing his arms above his head. The principal promptly turned his back, toting his disappointed colleague back to the offices. The crowd began to disperse, but not without giving Denki appreciative and curious glances. He didn’t notice because he had his face scrunched up in sheer elation and was wiggling his hips about in a happy dance.
“Yes! Yes! I’m gonna finally get my team! A real paranormal investigation team!” he bleated happily. As she spun around to give his rump a little shake, someone barked a sharp “Hey!”
“Eh?” he blinked and looked over his shoulder, where Kinoko was standing there with her arms crossed.
“You’re gonna let me investigate with you, right?”
“Uh… Sure.” Denki really didn’t think she would be useful, but if he refused, she’d probably show up anyway and cause all sorts of trouble. Kinoko didn’t really sense his deception, though, because her face split into a wide grin.
“All right! Don’t worry, I know exactly what’s going on,” she touted with a self-satisfied head waggle. She twirled on her heel to begin marching off back to class, her nose stuck up in the air and her hands on her hips. “You’re smart to take advantage of my expertise!”
“Yeah… Whatever,” Denki groaned unenthusiastically, and when she finally rounded the corner, he released the massive sigh he’d been holding. Everyone had finally gone back into the classrooms, and that finally gave him the chance to turn around and look at Reiko. She was staring down at her feet with her hands clasped shyly behind her back, and though her silvery hair hung down into her face, he could see just how bright pink her skin was.
“Thank you so much…” she whispered, tilting her head up to peer at him with bashful, glistening eyes. “No one’s ever defended me like that before…”
“Uh, hello, can I get some credit here?” Hanta griped, digging his finger in his ear.
“Of course. Thank you too, Hanta,” she smiled, and the boy sniffed haughtily. “But Denki,” she continued, looking back at him. “If we can’t solve this haunting, now you have to deal with the principal… Won’t that be too much trouble?”
“Don’t sweat it, Reiko!” he reassured her, winking while he gave her a confident thumbs-up. “I know the three of us— and Kinoko, maybe— will be able to figure this out, especially with a whole day of investigation. We’re gonna get to the bottom of it and clear your name for good!”
Reiko blinked, then smiled sweetly. It was such a pretty smile, a genuine smile, and it made Denki’s heart flutter.
Honestly, establishing his paranormal investigation team wasn’t the most important thing anymore. He had to get to the bottom of this paranormal panic for Reiko’s sake. He had to make sure she could keep smiling like that— that she didn’t have anything to fear in being who she was.
