√A really gives a strong sense of it, during the finale. Hide going to find Kaneki, rather than attempt to seek medical attention for his wounds. He spends as much time as possible pretending everything is fine, having one final talk with Kaneki and reassuring him that he knew all along but didn't care.....then dies in his arms. Kaneki carrying Hide's body back to CCG's main base camp (smiling gently at him the whole time), intending to commit Suicide by Cop.
