Something I don’t hear many people talk about is how significant the name „Edward Nashton” actually is for the Batman 2022. The name Edward Nigma/ Edward Nygma has been used for YEARS in both comics and in media such as the Gotham TV show but nobody talks about WHY they called him Nashton and not Nygma and I’m going insane!!

In his original story line, Ed was abused by his father in the classic puzzle story line where his father accused him of cheating in the contest. THAT is why he changed his name from Nashton to Nygma. So that he could stray away from memories of his abusive father.
In the Batman 2022, Ed’s story was changed, Ed was now an orphan who grew up in the orphanage. Ed did NOT have any negative memories of his father. Therefore he never felt the need to change his name from Nashton to Nygma. This wasn’t just a random name change, this was a DELIBERATE choice made by Reeves and Craig to show the impact of his different origin!!
