At Noonan’s, Kara spots Lucy and James on a couch, drinking coffee and eating hot pastry scones. She sees them and they see her and identical smiles start curling on their lips.
Until she’s in front of them, that is. Then worry crinkles their brows like it always does on her own. A tiny little crinkle on her face and if probably tugged, it could unravel all her darkest secrets.
“I told her. She knows,” Kara breathes out. “I think she hates me.”
If Alex knows, then that’s it. There’s nothing holding her back anymore. This is a piece of herself that strangers in a cafe can actually see. So, Kara just kinda crumbles into James and Lucy. She flops over James and buries her head in Lucy’s chest, hiding her face so no one but them knows she’s crying.
She doesn’t want to be crying, but it’s already happening. All she can do is muffle it so the huffy sound doesn’t hurt their fragile ears.
James smooths his palm over the back of her legs. “What happened?”
What didn’t?
Oh, her sister’s gay and in love with her cop friend. She can’t say that part. She won’t say that part; that’s supposed to be Alex’s thing.
Meanwhile, at the same time Alex was realizing she wasn’t who she thought she was after befriending Maggie, the Flash told Kara about his polycule back home and Kara suggested it to James and Lucy so they didn’t have to hurt each other for her sake. Alex was falling in love and Kara already was in love, with Lucy and James. They were dating, all of them, even if it took a minute to figure out how Kara wants James and how she wants Lucy. Alex coming out to her had helped Kara come to terms with wanting the smell of Lucy stuck in her nose as much as she wants James’ hands all over her.
But she had kissed them a few dozen times over now, all while keeping it hidden away from Alex. They’d agreed to come clean, though. So. She just did.
And then they had to take care of something DEO, so Alex stormed out of her place and Kara can’t go back home if Alex is going to be at her door waiting to belittle her.
“We were just talking. It was a weird day between us. She… told me something, I didn’t really know how to react, I think we were fighting? I don’t really know. But we were having a make-up talk. I chose a bad time. I told her it was a bad time, we were talking about something important about her. She kept insisting because she could tell something was bothering me, and… I just told her! Isn’t that so stupid?”
“Don’t call yourself that,” Lucy says and it’s instant in Kara’s ears as soon as the word stupid leaves her mouth. “She could never hate you.”
James put his free arm over Lucy, snuggling both of his girls closer to him.
“You’re her favorite person,” he says. “There’s not anything in any world that could change that.”
Kara sniffles against Lucy’s chest. “I’m getting snot on your top.”
Lucy stifles her laughter so the noise doesn’t make Super-hearing Kara flinch away from her. She just kisses Kara’s forehead instead.
James hands her a napkin and Kara rubs it above her lip.
“Rao. She treats me like a child, and here I am acting like one.”
Lucy hums. “Ah. So, Alex thinks we’re deviants preying on you for a threesome?”
“Pretty much,” Kara grumbles. The napkin rips in her clenched fist. “Maybe I like threesomes.”
James reaches over to dry her eyes with his gentle thumb. “Threesomes like you, too.”
Kara can’t help but get giggly.
“How do you do that?” She wonders out loud. “I was sobbing all the way here, but I talk to you two for just a minute and you’re already making me laugh?”
“I’m an agent, Jimmy’s a photographer,” Lucy says. “We’re good at getting people to do what we want.”
James squints, amused. “Yeah, that’ll make us sound great to Alex.”
Lucy laughs softly into Kara’s hair. “Good point,” she agrees. “No one tell her I made that joke.”
James shrugs against them. “Still bossy.”
“I’m a major!” Lucy nudges him with her shoulder, teeth caught on her lip. “I’m supposed to be bossy.”
“No one tell her we’re talking about threesomes,” Kara says next. “She doesn’t need all the details.”
That definitely doesn’t need to be said, but Lucy and James nod anyway. If pointing out the obvious helps Kara, then they could listen all day.
Instead, they listen to the sound of their phones beeping and beeping and beeping.
“That’s Alex, isn’t it?” Kara asks. She knows the answer already.
They check their phones and nod again.
“She’s at your place,” Lucy says, and curls a strand of blonde hair around her tan finger with her free hand.
James’ handsome eyes catch on the napkin still crunching in Kara’s grasp. “You don’t have to talk to her yet,” comes the offer. “We can go back to ours until you’re ready to see her again.”
Kara sucks air between her teeth.
Here she is, maybe the most powerful woman on the planet, terrified of disappointing her sister. Yet she’s cradled into Lucy Lane and James Olsen as if they were pieces of a puzzle. A set that you shouldn’t separate. The moon, the sun, and the stars.
Kara never wants to stop being hugged by them. She never wants to go back to a time where she doesn’t know how comfy their bed is, how comfy their bodies are. She doesn’t ever want to risk forgetting how the taste of them mixes together on her tongue; that taste is better than anything they sell here.
“No. Alex has to get used to seeing us together. I don’t want to go back to pretending like I wouldn’t care if Lucy disappeared and like it didn’t break my heart to call off our date, James. You’re so important to me. She should know. Everyone should know.”
Smiles crinkle their faces again. Kara loves it when she’s the reason they smile.
James pulls her into a quick kiss and Lucy follows right after him.
“So, we’re going then?” Lucy asks in-between closing the gaps between their mouths.
“Ahuh.” Kara snuggles up closer to them. “After five more minutes of cuddling and kissing, please.”
Lucy looks up to James. “Now who’s bossy?”
“I said please! Besides, it’s not my fault. You taste like blueberries, it’s irresistible.”
“It’s the scones,” James says.
Kara nods. “We should order scones to-go, then.”
“In five more minutes?” James runs his hand over the back of her knee and ohhh.
“Five more minutes and then we’ll order and then we’ll wait until the scones are heated up,” Kara decides. “Okay?”
Lucy twirls the strand she still has of Kara’s hair around her finger. “You’re lucky you’re irresistible.”
“Even more than blueberries?” Kara asks, batting her lashes all-innocent like.
James laughs into her teeth before he kisses her. “Even more than blueberries.”
