Still catching up on last year’s publications! I’m deeply grateful to Traci Brimhall for inviting me to write a poem for the Skies and Space Edition of Kansas Magazine, and to everyone at Sunflower Publishing, especially Nathan Pettengill for handling my proof. This is my first general magazine publication, and I’m really happy with the poem inspired by the theme. I hope that everyone enjoys reading it and perhaps is moved to visit Powell Observatory or go apple picking in Louisburg and elsewhere in Kansas 🔭🌔🍎 (On a side note, despite what the poem’s speaker says, I do continue to blame things on mercury retrograde 😂)

Yesterday we took a trip up through central (or is it north-central?) Kansas to see, among other things, the Coronado Heights "Castle". The structure sits on top of a hill that has a view that spans for miles over the Kansas plains, and climbing to the top of the old stone building expands that view by a little. It's definitely an interesting little historical oddity to check out if you're in the area, and the view is certainly worth it if you've only ever seen Kansas from ground level. I was hiking with my camera into one of my favorite locations in Western Kansas to shoot a few landscape photos. It was a trip home to visit 'silence'. You could hear a bumble bee hovering between the sunflowers a hundred feet across the spring fed farm pond. Today's lighting and weather did not lend itself well to scenic landscape photos though, with a cold north breeze and heavy overcast. Looking towards the horizon, I saw tumbleweeds pushed by a heavy wind. Then I realized the landscape photo today was not going to be that distant Image, but the tumbleweed stopped between these two beautiful shades of grass nearly at my feet. #home #kansas #kansasmag #kansasphotographer #midwest #praire #landscape #tumbleweed #noplacelikeks #kansastourism #simplicity #silence #wichitaphotgrapher
