Kanye’s James Brown moment: “Sold Brother No. 1“
Just another Trump Nixon repeat because history is repeating itself.
James Brown endorsed Hubert Humphrey in the 1968 Presidential election. As a result, he was called an Uncle Tom by many; the Black Panthers dismissed him as a capitalist and as “Sold Brother No. 1”.
In 1972, James Brown endorsed Richard Nixon even though, just before the two men had their photo op meeting, Nixon told an aide: “No, no, no, no. No more black stuff. No more blacks from now on, just don’t bring ’em in here.”

Karma for Kanye #BoycottKanye
Brown’s fortunes took a turn for the worse through his ties to Nixon, an association that damaged his standing with many of his black fans. He went from being the man who’d sold a million tickets at the Harlem Apollo in 1969 to someone who had debts totaling $5m by 1978.
— The Guardian
The decision led to a boycott of his performances and, according to Brown, cost him a big portion of his black audience.
He faced problems with the IRS for failure to pay back taxes.
He had served two-and-a-half years of two concurrent six-year sentences for aggravated assault and other felonies.

2018 and Kanye
I love the artist formerly known as Kanye West. I’ve been listening to his music since I was 12 years old, he’s shaped how I view the world politically, artistically and how he’s been an amazing influence as to how I view myself. I believe his overt experimentation through his music is an incredible perspective to view one’s life; to be constantly changing and reinventing yourself into what you believe is a better version of yourself is an incredible way to live life and a challenge I try to impose upon myself so as to not succumb to the pitfalls of complacency. I’ve listened to all his albums and even went as far as to review one!
However, what 2018 has shown me is that Kanye West can’t be your superhero. Over the last year or so Kanye West has said the following:
“When you hear about slavery for 400 years — for 400 years? That sounds like a choice”

“I was in a victim mentality”
Now I highlight these statements not to shame Kanye for his politics, but to highlight that these statements represent a shift in Kanye’s worldview. Now, most people’s political beliefs do change over time, it’s a byproduct of growth and having different life experiences. However, Kanye’s new identity is in such stark contrast to his old identity, following a completely different ideology than the man that proudly displayed his power to the world and spit back at the criticism and vitriol thrown his way:
Where just like that, when someone comes up and says something like, ‘I am a god,’ everybody says ‘Who does he think he is?’ I just told you who I thought I was. A god. I just told you. That’s who I think I am. Would it have been better if I had a song that said ‘I am a gangster’ or if I had a song that said ‘I am a pimp.’ All those colors and patinas fit better on a person like me, right? (Source).
Kanye used to be a challenger of convention American notions of race, class and identity. Kanye used to look at structures, like the fashion industry, and insert himself within those structure as a means to empower himself and others. I see Kanye’s political statements the same way I see headlines on Breitbart, bad-faith arguments, and classist, oftentimes racist, gaslighting. Championing the ideas of modern day, anti-left conservatism, is in many ways peddling misinformation and I’m saddened to see Kanye West falling into conservative media machine.
