PM: Farmers won't be hit by fuel subsidy removal as they ride kapchai
SERDANG, Nov 22, 2014:
The hike in fuel prices following the government’s decision to abrogate petrol subsidies will not affect Malaysian farmers.
This is because farmers do not possess luxury vehicles but instead ride low-capacity engine motorcycles, or kapchai as they are commonly called, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“It’s a waste to provide fuel subsidies as you all ride kapchai, am I right?”
“People here (urban areas) possess luxury cars such as Mercedes, with one tank filled with 75 litres, which is different from those with kapchai, which only takes seven litres at one go,” he said when launching the Maha Expo 2014, an agricultural exhibition, here today.
Explaining that the government would be channelling larger allocations towards the agricultural sector, Najib said this would only happen if the new mechanism — removal of fuel subsidies — could successfully save the government’s expenditure.
He also referred to the 55 sen hike in fuel in Indonesia, which Najib said was more than Malaysia’s.
Yesterday, it was announced that subsidies for RON95 and diesel will be removed from Dec 1. The price will be set according to prevailing global market prices.
The change is due to global crude oil prices being below that charged at Malaysia fuel pumps.
The current prices of RON95 and diesel are RM2.30 and RM2.20 per litre respectively.
