In 1971 in the Karakum desert near Darvaza village in Turkmenistan, the Soviet petroleum engineers accidently tapped into an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground just below the camps and the drilling rig collapsed becoming a natural gas crater. AK YOL. So, how did I spend those 8 dollars on my pocket? Well, 5 of them gave me a lunch when I needed it the most. It was the second day in Turkmenistan when I stopped at Ak Yol Hotel. This is one of few places along the 500 km stretch where you could buy food (and apparently get married!). I got served local specialities including manti (dumplings) and cay (tea) by two handsome gentlemens in a yurt with both air conditioner and a tv. Quite ironic to sit in the middle of the desert with these kind of luxuries.

I`m standing in the desert. Barefoot on the cold sand. It´s late, probably around midnight, and the shadows from the full moon creates a new world in front of me. They appear different at night, the sand dunes. More powerful.

A car is passing on the road some hundred meters away. The sound from the engine gets more and more distant until everything gets silent again. Complete silence. It´s like I´m standing in a room without furniture. Thick walls that keeps every little sound outside.

I pitch my tent and crawl in. My legs are acheing after 150 km on bad roads. From early morning to long after the sunset. Just pedaling. And in four hours the alarm will go off again. Another day on the road. Another day in the desert.
